Ripon bounced back after last week’s heavy defeat at Doncaster with a morale boosting win at home to bottom placed Castleford.
The Ripon pack took control right from the start and it was only some stout defending that denied them an early score.
It was only a matter of time however and after 11 minutes James Potter
went over after huge pressure by his fellow forwards. The pack were now well on top and 5 minutes later scrum half Joe Rowntree
took advantage from a pushover from 5 metres out to score in the corner.A superb conversion by Guy Watkinson gave the hosts a 12-0 lead.
The visitors had periods of constructive play looking dangerous at times and during a good spell a turn over in the Ripon 22 resulted in a well taken try.
Half time was approaching when a misguided clearance by the Castleford defence landed in the grateful arms of winger Ben James who cantered over for a try and a half time score of 17-5.
The second half was a similar story with the Ripon pack dominating proceedings but it was 20 minutes before another score, full back Jason Bell chipping over the defence and outpacing the cover to go over in the corner.
The visitors were next to score after another passage of good play crossing in the corner to make the score 22-10.
With 10 minutes to go the Ripon forwards were keeping the home side on the front foot and just before the final whistle No 8 Miles Warriner and Joe Rowntree
found Jason Bell on hand to crash over wide out for his second try and complete the scoring.
This was a hard fought win in terrible conditions with the pack playing a major role led by the outstanding ‘Roscoe’ Newcombe .It was a good overall team effort and with 4 games to go secures Yorkshire 2 league rugby for another season.
Already certain of relegation the Castleford side played rugby at times that belied their lowly league position and it should not be long before they return.
The Hornblowers entertained high flying Ilkley 2 nds and made them work hard for their 15-11 victory.
In a thoroughly entertaining game in poor conditions the result could have gone either way right up to the final whistle.
