Cup run comes to an end
Almondsbury spoil the party for our Reserve team
We went into this rearranged Cup fixture feeling positive after the first attempt was abandoned at half time back before Christmas due to bad weather.
With Ben Jenkins and James Shrimpton back available we had a full squad to choose from and the lads put on a good show for the 40 strong crowd.
We started brightly as we did in the first fixture and immediately caused problems with our pace against the step higher team from Div 1 west but it was them who struck first when a corner was awarded when the ball was clearly out came across and Greeny cleared but the Striker hit it first time through a crowd of players and in over the post markers rushing out.
But you would’ve thought they would push on and control the game but their long ball approach was easily dealt with by our back four and we were soon knocking on the door for an equaliser and it came in the 34th minute when Matt Hatt rose and headed home a cross from the lively Dan Deakin after he raced onto a Rob Firth ball down the line for 1-1.
This shocked the away team and with us winning balls all over the pitch and good movement throughou we deservedly went ahead on the stroke of half time when Matt Hatt produced a good finish from the edge of the area after the midfield had won the ball back pressing hard and giving them no time on the ball.
Half time 2-1 dream on
The 2nd half begins and to be fair Almondsbury came out with a different plan and soon were level and then straight after won a penalty for a foul in the area but Jack dived full length to his right to save it to keep us in the game.
But as already mentioned the away teams tactics changed by unsettling our flow of play and this proved vital as they were awarded a very soft penalty and this time scored to take the lead.
Andy made some changes with Nick Bressington and Liam Burnett coming on for Harry and Dan Trying to get us level and for a while it looked possible until the away winger put in a cross which took a deflection off Ben Jenkins head to loop over to the onrushing midfielder to head pass Jack.
With us now 4-2 down Adam Toms was brought on and switching to a 3-1-4-2 formation but we could not get anything back to try force extra time.
Final score 2-4
Andy said after the game “I feel we exceeded expectations in this Cup competition with already defeating 3 step 6 teams and came up against 1 to many in Almondsbury but showed we can compete with that level and even out played them for long periods in this defeat whilst trying to play good football”.
We now must concentrate on moving up the league.
