Another bad day at the office for RM, who struggled to create chances in the first half and were therefore fighting an uphill battle throughout the second period. Cholsey went ahead when an attempted cross flew over Paul Soper in goal and went straight in for a fortunate opener before adding 2 more before the break following some slack marking in the RM area. RM were playing with Simon Collett alone up top, and really found it difficult to get forward in meaningful numbers to support him, so a change at half time saw Alex Bird pushed further up the pitch and Andy Warmington also moving forward from the back.
And the change paid immediate dividends. Collett’s cross was met by Bird’s powerful header which was tipped onto the crossbar by the keeper and rebounded out as far as the edge of the box, where Warmington was poised to plant another header over the prone keeper from fully 18 yards. 3-1 now, and RM seemed to sniff a chance to get back in it, Bird going close on a couple of occasions only to be thwarted by the keeper. But RM’s ability to concede soft goals befell them again, and Cholsey scored three more unanswered strikes to run out comfortable 6-1 winners.
Into the Xmas break for RM, who really need to buck up their ideas in the New Year or a relegation battle will be a certainty
