Match report Wigan St Pats v Rochdale Cobras
Cobras bite hard at Wigan
Wigan St Pats 10 – 36 Rochdale Cobras
Rochdale Cobras made it two away wins on the bounce for the first time this season last Sauturday with a convincing win over Wigan St Pats who had put 50 points over cobras at home earlier in the season.
The game kicked off at a furious pace with the young St Pats team using the ball well testing the cobras defensive line with every opportunity and looked the most likely to score playing some very structured rugby league, this possession soon turned into points as their centre crashed over after some enterprising play. Stern words from captain Ryan Tetley seemed to have had a positive effect as right from the kickoff Joe Qanuici put in a monstrous hit which dislodged the ball of the Wigan centres right in front of Seta Kolinisaus who scooped the ball up to sprint 20 meters to go in under the posts with Gareth Hutchins Kicking the extras. Another big hit this time form Gareth Sharrocks forced a knock on by St Pats and from the resulting Scrum Rochdale were over again after a training ground move with Qaniuci and Anton grant sent Kolinisaus over untouched Hutchins again converting. Cobras were now in the driving seat with their defence causing st pats all kind of problems with big hits from Qanuici, Sharrocks, Mark Murgatroyd and Tetley leading the way. In open play after good work from Tom Morris and Brandon Mils the ball was whipped to Fereti Rauqe Bau who stepped the cover to in under the sticks with Hutchins tagging on the two just as the ref blew for half time.
Half Time - Wigan St Pats 4 – 18 Rochdale Cobras
Wigan started the second half much in the same way they started the first with some of the best rugby on display on the day and again got over the white wash after a great set play involving the same centre as the first try this time kicking the conversion. From the resulting kickoff Cobras went deep and St Pats didn’t even get past their own 20 meter line such was the fast and uncompromising Rochdale defense. Wigans next attacking play was short lived as they decided to kick early to get cobras out of their half but this had little effect as that man again Kolinisau ran 60 meters in a fine solo effort to collect his hat-trick Hutchins again kicking the conversion. Murgatroyd then got his first of the season after a great ball from hooker Tetley put the big prop running a great line through a large gap Hutchins adding the two. Fittingly the last try was scored by man of the match and Cobras loose forward Qanuici breaking the line 30 meters and out running the cover, Hutchins converting to make it six kicks from six in his first game of the season.
