History
The idea of starting a rugby union club in the Rockingham area was first discussed in 1971 by 5 blokes ( Idwyl Mace, Bill Craig, Gary Guy, Alan Guy and Dave Arnold ) who were travelling from Rockingham to Palmyra to train and play each week. It was during this time that Idwyl said he knew a guy called Mike Walker who played for Leicester Tigers who would probably like to get involved. Nothing was done that year but the next year 1972 an advert was put in the local paper and Idwyl Mace, Peter White, Alan Guy and Mike Walker went to Gary Guys house where Mike presented a cheque for $50.00 from Dr. Bob Warner to start the club off (Bill Craig was in hospital and Dave Arnold was working so were unable to attend). It was decided to put another advert in the local paper, this time the meeting was at Alan Guys place at 17 Mulligan Way Orelia, this time more than 20 people turned up and from there a committee was formed.
Idwal Mace, a former UK referee was elected president. Mike Walker was elected secretary, Gary Guy was elected treasurer, Bob Warner elected medical and publicity officer, Alan Guy, Mike Neal, John Marshall and Vernon Batstone were elected to committee. Gary Mickle (who represented W.A. on 58 occasions) was one of several people to become a foundation member to the new club, including Ray Jones.
The name Wallaroos was chosen for the new club, at the time the club never had a home ground, and with its members coming from a wide area including, Medina, Orelia, Calista, Rockingham, Warnbro, Safety Bay and Spearwood choosing an area name common to all was difficult. And as this was the first Rugby Union club in the area, it was though apt to name the club after the first side formed in Australia in 1870, The Wallaroos.
That year the club only played social games on a Sunday, all those games were played at Thomas oval in Medina,
The club had their first win when they beat a representative team from Kalamunda at Thomas oval in Medina. From the kick off Wallaroos showed they were out to win and swept into an early lead with a great individual try by G. Davis. The team kept the pressure on for the remainder of the first half and were rewarded with another try from G. Davis and a brilliant team effort which saw winger P. Cann score between the posts and the try converted. At half time the Wallaroos lead 14 points to nil. In the second half Kalamunda staged a come back but were repulsed time and again by strong tackling and covering. Wallaroos came again late in the second half and their strength gradually wore down Kalamunda. Further trys were recorded by P. Cann (2), G. Jones (2), and forward Gary Guy (1), all of which were converted by kicker Tony Moylett. The full time whistle saw the Wallaroos run out winners 44-0.
During that time the committee approached the Kwinana council for a permanent place to be our home ground but they said they had nowhere for us so they went to Rockingham council who gave them Bungaree oval.
In 1973 the club were admitted to the 3rd and 4th grades of the West Australian competition in that first year they were beaten in the grand final of third grade by another new club Wannaroo the score was 8-5.
The next year Bill Craig along with Dr. David Watkins and Gordon Simpson started the junior section of the club. Thus the Wallaroos were able to field 3 teams the W.A.J.R.U. competition played on a Saturday morning at Langley Park, Perth.
Difficulty was experience in transporting the boys to Perth each week, and so the club hired a mini bus to take the boys to their games and return them home safely. (And so the tradition was started)
In the same season another first grade player Derek Wood introduced Rugby Union as an after school activity to his pupils, and formed to under 12 teams.
All the teams fared well in their introduction to the game, especially the under 12 no.1 side, which carried all before it, being beaten only once by Scotch College in their final game. Also that year the under 10 side were asked to play in a mini Rugby exhibition game, played prior to the New Zealand All Blacks versus W.A. State side at Perry Lakes Stadium.
In 1974 Vern Batstone became president and the new coach was ex-state and Western Suburbs player Tim Beale. (Both clubs now compete for the Tim Beale Cup.) The first grade finished the season runners up behind Wanneroo, but managed to win the 1974 third grade premiership, beating Wanneroo 16 - 8 in the Grand Final.
The 1975 season saw the Wallaroos promoted to the first grade competition, fielding 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade. It was hard for the club to go from third grade to first in one step but were holding their own in the middle of the table. Idwal Mace was president again.
In 1976, Vern Batstone became president; Tim Beale left the area and returned to play and coach with Western Suburbs and 'A' Grade full back took on the position of coach. The team found it hard again and despite going close to causing major upsets could not find the winning touch, finishing in the bottom order of the competition.
At this time we were allocated the area we are now on (Dowling Street Reserve) and the council gave us a loan to build the clubrooms. At the clubs expense with funds raised by the club members the grounds were fully fenced, cleared and reticulated.
1977 became the year of the clubhouse and with most of the clubs efforts going into this tremendous goal. The teams did not enjoy too much success on the playing field.
In early 1977 the building was commence to plans drawn by first grade player Paul Lynn and using self help labor the building was finished by the end of the 1977 season. Some of the clubmembers that work on the project are, Eric Edwards - Builder, Bob Cardy - Builder, Jack Biletic - Concretor, Mike Walker - Cabinet Maker, Mike Cornhill - Roofer, Mal Siddons - Building Services, Joe Hawkins - Plasterer, Chris Vaughan - Plumber, Dave Elsome - Joiner, Bill Button - Welder, Frank Birks - Bricklayer, Ken Coombes - Bricklayer, Derek Vickery - Bricklayer, John Winter - Bricklayer, Peter Ablett - Bricklayer and Brian Stanley - Draftsman. Idwal Mace supervised the digging out of the septic tanks by Derek Poole and Trevor Salter. Also many other club members wives and friends donated their spare time, skills and energy to achieve the building of the clubhouse.
1977 was also the first year of colts for the club. First grade players Ken Coombes and Frank Birks put in a lot of hard work to form a colts under 20 side. Despite a few heavy defeats at the start of the season, these youngsters, many of them completely new to Rugby Union, fought on well and at the close of the season, won their final 6 games.
The under 12 and under 14 no.1 side both finished the season unbeaten. This tremendous effort and the fine effort of other sides earned the club enough points to take the Peter Bowman trophy in its inaugural year for the most consistent junior club. Two members of the under 16 side and 7 members of the under 14 were selected to play for W.A. on the East Coast tours.
Some of the coaches that had a lot to do with encouraging and fostering interest in Rugby in the local area in the early years were Trevor Marriner, Tom Price, Mal Roden, Alan Phillips, Gary Guy, Bill Craig and Basil Huff. By 1977 the club had 6 teams from under 10 to under 16.
Peter White was president and Clarrie Shaw was club coach when the clubrooms were officially opened on the 19th of March 1978 by Sir Wallace Kyle. Because we had been concentrating on the club rooms the playing side had been neglected and we decided to ask the W.A.R.U. if we could go back to third grade this was granted and we set about rebuilding the playing strength of the club.
1980 Vern Batstone became president again.
1982 Richard Lindsay won the clubperson of the year.
In 1983 under the guidance of Norm Roberts, Tom Price and Bill Craig. The club won the third grade premiership against Perth/Bayswater, Bob Callard kicked a penalty in the last minute to win the game and on the way home from Perry lakes, Bill Swinton threw his boots over the side of the Fremantle traffic bridge declaring that he had retired. F. Willey assisted Vern as joint president and Joan Jones and Richard Lindsay jointly won the clubperson of the year.
Minor premiers for third grade 1984. Eddie Deery won the clubperson of the year.
Minor premiers for third grade 1985. Bob Callard won the clubperson of the year.
1986 Bob Cardy became the president, Bob Callard won the clubperson of the year again.
1987 Steve Spinks won the clubperson of the year.
Minor premiers for third grade 1988, under Coach Jim Canning. Frank Pope won the clubperson of the year.
(During the eighties we were promoted to second grade. After a few season we then put back in the third grade competition.)
1989 Ash and Robin Sewell jointly won the clubperson of the year.
1990 Lesley Craig won the clubperson of the year.
1991 Peter Kane won the clubperson of the year.
1992 Ash Sewell became president and also won the clubperson of the year.
Rockingham won the third grade premiership in 1993 coached by Jim Canning and was promoted back to the first grade competition in 1994. Ash Sewell won the clubperson of the year.
1994 was very successful for the club winning the open Cottesloe 7's competition and making the first grade finals. One special moment was beating Nedlands at home. A foundation member was heard to say, "I've waited over twenty years for this.". Andy Hacking won the clubperson of the year. Rockingham also had a Women's Rugby team.
1995 Nick White won the clubperson of the year.
1996 Bob Callard became president, Nick White won the clubperson of the year.
1997 Bill Craig won the clubperson of the year.
1998 Jim Bennett won the clubperson of the year.
1999 Rockingham was forced to play district club side Leeming; the winner would play in the Perth competition the following year. The reemergence of a colt's team, coached by Tony Martin was a welcome sight. Bob Callard won the clubperson of the year.
The 2000 season saw Rockingham's first grade finished in seventh spot on the ladder but was again forced to play district club side Leeming; the winner would play in the Perth competition the following year, Steve Kruger was coach. Bob Callard won the clubperson of the year. Colin Boden was awarded honoury life membership.
In 2001 Dave McLean was coach, the first grade finished seventh. The colts just missed out on a finals birth. Brenda Boden won the clubperson of the year. Bob Callard and Derek Collie were both awarded honoury life memberships. With ten junior teams, and the only club in W.A. to field teams in every age group, and also sponsoring nine high school teams. (Bringing up the number to nineteen teams in the Rockingham area.) Rockingham led the nation in player growth in Rugby Union in 2001.
Dave Mahanga represented Rockingham in the State team; being awarded fairest and best state player. Rockingham has a reputation of producing state junior players, this was evident when the combined high schools played the private schools association in the curtain raiser to the Wallabies v Springboks test match, seven of the starting fifteen for the combined high schools team played for Rockingham.
Eight boys represented Western Australia in the state teams and six boys made the schoolboys team that would of played in Darwin in the schoolboy championship, if not for the Ansett collapse.
In 2002, Mike Canning was President and Rockingham Rugby Union Club celebrated 30 years of rugby union in the peel region. The club held a Reunion Dinner and past and present members reflexed on past glories and caught up with old friends.
Jim Canning was first grade coach, Hector Langkilde was assistant coach. Fairest and best was Andrew Bertoncin, most improved was Kyle Edwards. First grade finished tenth.
Mel McEnteer was second grade coach, fairest and best was Glyn Roberts, most improved was Nigel Chamberlain. Second grade should of been in the finals except the Sunday fixtures did not work at well for the team.
Third grade was coached by Willie Van Dyke. Fairest and best was Ross Cardy, most improved was Daniel Macilroy. Thirds stated off well but could not keep up the pace.
Troy Strong coached colts and took the club for fittness training. Colts grade fairest and best was Devon Mulholland, most improved was Tyler Edwards. The colts team lost valuble points while there state players were on representative duty and missed the finals.
The Higest point scorer was Eugene Taylor. Dave Mahanga scored the most tries. The Bob Cardy encouragement award went to Troy Strong, Isaac Tugaga was players player and the club persons award went to Peggy Taylor.
Rockingham fielded U/7's, U/8's, U/10's, U/11's, U/12's, U/13, U/14's, U/15's & U/17's.
The 10's & 11's had a very successful year winning most there games and hosting St Andrews a private school team from Singapore. The 14's, 15's & 17's made it to the finals. Unfortunately the 14's & 17's were knocked out before the grand final. The under 15's managed the double winning the minor and the major premiership.
To cap off what has been an outstanding season, the under 15's team lead by coach Bill Courtland and Manager Neville Smith embarked on a four game playing tour of New Zealand. The boys were based initially at Rotorua. They played Eastern Districts at Te Puki, Trident High school at Whakatane and Central Bay of Plenty at Rotorua and also North Harbour champions Massey. The Rockingham side enjoyed the tour even though it was a very tough rugby experience..

First Grade Grand Final Match Report.
Rockingham took their first Districts first grade premiership today with a narrow, untidy 20-18 win over Wanneroo at Perry Lakes. Wanneroo outscored Rocky three tries to two but goal kicker Aaron Johnston had a shocker with the boot, missing seven from eight attempts. Wanneroo were on fire early and scored a try after six minutes when centre Sherwyn Hokianga stormed down the wing to touch down in the corner. Rockingham bounced back with rampaging forward play, and Wanneroo handed them all the ball they wanted with an inaccurate strategic kicking game. Rockingham capitalised after 11 minutes play when lock Isaac Tugaga barged over for a captain's try after repeated forward charges. Flyhalf Jackie Lingman converted for a 7-5 lead. Despite losing lock Pat Gallagher to the sin bin for retaliation, Rockingham went further ahead when inside centre Shane Dickson charged over after several phases of attack on Wanneroo's line. Lingman converted for a 14-5 lead. Johnston pegged one back for Wanneroo with a kick from in front to go into the break 14-8 down. Lingman replied for Rockingham three minutes into the second half with a long-range goal but 12 minutes later Wanneroo slashed the defecit when they kicked for touch to claim a lineout in Rocky's 22. The Wanneroo forwards drove for the line and replacement lock Cosmo Powley claimed the five pointer as the maul crashed over the white line, closing the gap to 17-13. Five minutes on Lingman added a penalty but Wanneroo were finishing strongly, although uncontested scrums late in the game did not help their cause. With the clock ticking down, Wanneroo put the cat amongst the pigeons with a sweeping back line attack with an overlap. Winger Mat Mullins brushed off the last despairing tackle and shot down the sideline, running around in goal to touch down at an improved conversion angle. But it was not enough and the conversion that would have sent the game into extra time slid wide, handing Rockingham the cup.
Official man of the match was Rockingham openside flanker, Karaitehana Horo.
And yes, Rockingham still have the loudest crowd in Western Australian rugby.

Under 15's Grand Final Match Report.
Today (Sat) saw our young guys play in their respectrive grand finals. The under 15 side started the day off. It seemed that the week off had not been the best thing for them . They started off slowly with Joondalup piling on pressure. The line held for some time but in the end it was too much and Joondallup sliiped out of a couple of weak tackles and scored. 5 - 0. The guys still struggled as again Joondallup continued to harry the Rocky line. Again the pressure was too great as the backline was caught out of position and Joondallup crossed again. Things were looking grim 12 - 0. Half time came and the guys were told to pull their fingers out. Some of the stronger players were found wanting and were let know that a better effort was needed. The second half was a very diferant game. The Rocky boys were able to get a bit of ball and used it well . The forwards were particularly good with Quintin Stockil, Daniel Stockdon and Josh Fletcher leading the way. Fullback Joel Sturmfels had been the only barrier to Joondallup tries on at least 3 occasions pulling off wicked tackles. Zac Walton also played well and was rewarded with a good forwards try early in the second half. 12 - 5. Rockingham started to get a roll on and after a Joondallup infringement Daniel Hepword struck sweetly and Rocky started to look much better 12 - 8. Unfortunatly time started to run out. Joondallup put everything into defence and Rocky just could not break through. With this added pressure Rockingham made a mistake and were penalised which was converted to bring the score to 15 - 8 which was to be the final score. Time did run out in the end as Rockingham were parked on the Joondallup line. The boys were obviously dissapointed but though we lost they did the club proud and im sure Joondallup realised just how lucky they were the Rocky boys had slept in. Congratulations
Under 17's Grand Final Match Report.
In relation to the Under 17 side Things went much better. Going into the game many believed that our boys were rank outsiders. Palmyra had been playing very well in the latter part of the season having the premier group of Forwards trained By Willie Te Pania also a great Forward. Coaches Van Dyk and Cortland knew that the secret to success would be countering Palmyra's Pack. Before the game the coaching staff called upon all players especially the Older boys to take up their responsibility and do the things that had to be done. Early in the Game Palmyra fulfilled their expectations. They were very committed to the ball and aggressive at the breakdown. Rockingham were staying with them but it was obviously going to be a tight match. The wind was a factor with Rockingham using it in the first Half. Dudley Cortland was particularly effective with his tactical kicking. Palmyra did score first however with a try but Rockingham were able to hit back with two tries of their own and went into the half time break 12 - 5 up. At half time coach Van Dyk spoke about how their goal was to get on top early and how they had reached that goal. He also said that more effort was needed to retain that dominance. The boy believed his words and if anything came out even stronger. Palmyras dominance in the loose play was all but negated. Rather than trying to use his Loose forwards to combat Palmyra Van Dyk's Mini team principle worked perfectly as the Paly loose forwards were competing, not against 2 or 3 loose forwards around the field but 15 players all committed to the ball and all doing what was needed to gain possession. In the second half Rockingham started to completely dominate their opposition. Territory, Possession, Turnovers. Palmyra began to panic and many times turned the ball over whilst cool heads especially on the part of Dudley Cortland and Andrew Smith kept driving them back again and again. The full time whistle sounded and Rockingham were crowned Champions. After the match it was difficult to see who was the best players as they had all played so well. Arnie Slabber was particularly Damaging in Defence. Samuel Guy saved his best game of the year for the final as he worked tirelessly to drive his team forward. AJ Smiths ball delivery was excellent and Well Dudley was superb. I could go right through the team commenting on how well every player did but I think this is one example where the coaching staff had a lot to do with this result. The Van Dyk - Cortland Combination really outfoxed their opposite numbers so I add my congratulations to them as well as to all our Magnificent players. 2003 CHAMPIONS!!!!!!!!! yes.

Season 2005 Wind up.
Rockingham Rugby Union Club celebrated one of its most successful seasons in the history of the club at The 32nd Annual Dinner. Guest of honour was Rugby WA Community Rugby Manager and former Wallaby Mitch Hardy. Mitch talked about how well the club had done this year and congratulated all the members and supporters an there acheivement this season. With all three senior teams into the finals of the RugbyWA championship, Rockingham Rugby Club had a fantastic season. This year, the senior teams recorded 47 wins out of 54 games played, scoring over 1500 points and conceding less than 450.
At the Dinner Bob Callard was the master of ceremonies for the night and he thanked the coaches and support staff that made the season possible.
The A Grade, coached by Troy Strong ang Managed by Ash Sewell, improved on 2004’s fourth place in the Championship by claiming 2005’s minor premiership and winning the Grand Final 22 - 3 against last years Premiers ARK's. Rockingham’s trademark running game was this year complimented with additional steel in the forwards, the team winning many admirers for their combination of dynamic forward play from the likes of Leighton Potaka, Pat Gallagher and Chris Boardman; and scintillating back play expertly marshalled by five eighth Jackie Lingman. For the A Grade, Leighton Potaka was Fairest and best and most improved went to Garth Huggins.
Despite missing out the minor premiership in the B grade, Coach Phil Rumble’s side has been arguably the success story of the year. The 2004 season saw Rockingham’s second team finish with only 4 wins out of 17 games played, and in the bottom four of the championship. The 2005 vintage was a massive improvement, this season finishing in the top four and making the finals. Veteran and young Wallaroos combined effortlessly, as the likes of Brian Bai and Colin Boden in the front row masterful over their younger opponents in the art of scrummaging. The backs boasted the combination of the mazy running of Mark Scully and bulldozing efforts of Simon Douglas, coupled with the accurate kicking of Paul Kepa. Frank Pope was the second grade Manager. 2005 Season
With all three senior teams into the finals of the RugbyWA championship, Rockingham Rugby Union Club is celebrating one of its most successful seasons in the history of the club. This year, the senior teams recorded 47 wins out of 54 games played, scoring over 1500 points and conceding less than 450, a feat made more remarkable given the club currently has less than 100 senior players on its books.
The A Grade, coached by Troy Strong improved on 2004’s fourth place in the Championship by claiming 2005’s minor premiership.
The backs boasted the combination of the mazy running of Paul Scully and bulldozing efforts of Simon Douglas, coupled with the accurate kicking of Paul Kepa.
The Colts built on the success of 2004’s all conquering Under 17s team to carry all before them in the Under 19 Championship and claim the minor premiership. With many standout players in the side, it was only numerous state representative call-ups that threatened to derail Willie Van Dyk’s men, with half the side missing due to training and playing commitments for Western Australia. Several of the colts stepped up to play A and B grade this season, adding youth and dynamism to those teams.
With the climax of the Junior Rugby competition fast approaching Rockingham Rugby Union Club is well placed for the finals in the Under 17s, Under 14s and Under 13s age groups, with the Under 13s odds on to secure another minor premiership for the club. At Under 15s, scrum half Joshua Hanson was part of the all-conquering WAJRU Under 15 Development Squad that brought home three trophies from the Gold Coast Rugby Carnival.
2006 should see the advent of Premier Grade rugby at Dowling Street Reserve with the club looking to make the step up into the top level of competition in Western Australia, ensuring at least one club from the South plays in the state’s top tournament.

2006 Season
A landmark year for our club and rugby in Western Australia. Following our stellar 2005 season, we returned to the Premier Grade, as part of a revamped competition that saw the club field teams in First, Second, Fourth and Colts’ Grades.
Any doubts that we couldn’t compete at this level were dispelled in Round 1 as University, fielding Wallaby prop Dave Fitter amongst others, were beaten 29-14. The club went onto record three wins in the first four games of the season. State representative duties and injuries took their toll on our player numbers across all grades, and severely tested the depth in our ranks.
The arrival of the Emirates Western Force and Academy has provided increased opportunities for players to achieve at the highest level in the sport. Once again, Rockingham has undertaken a huge commitment to various representative duties at both senior and junior level, with players in the Western Force and Perth Gold, the Western Force Academy and State Under 19 sides.
The establishment of Emirates Western Force spelt the arrival of three new recruits, Tajhon Mailata, Pat O’Connor and Nathan Sharpe. Taj and Pat both saw game time with the Super 14 team this season, with Sharpey appointed as the team’s inaugural Captain.
The next generation, our juniors, had another outstanding year, increasing their playing numbers by 28%; with, the Under 14s and 15s going unbeaten all season to claim their respective Minor Premierships and competing in the Grand Final at Rugby Park. A big thank you to Steve Thomas and the other volunteers who have done such an immense job this year.
A big thank you also to the many volunteers who give up their time freely to make this club such a great place to play and watch rugby, and our sponsors and partners for their continued generosity and support of the Rockingham Rugby club.

All speakers praised the attitude and commitment of the players and club administrators during the season. The Rockingham under 16s capped of a great season by winning the Grand Final on the weekend in impressive style, defeating Joondalup 50 points to Nil in a fine display of rugby which highlighted not only their attacking flair but their resolute defence. All of the boys contributed well in a strong team performance making it hard to pick out individual performances. The boys had a strong finals campaign after being moved back into the U16s competition from the under 17s by Rugby WA, scoring a total of 155 points for and not conceding a point against. Coach Willie Van Dyke has done a great job in passing on his knowledge to a dedicated group of players that trained hard all season. Junior Rugby in Rockingham looks strong for next year with teams from under 14's to under 17's all reaching the finals and looking to build on their performances next year. Jacob Townrow, Marnus Ferreira and Kane Tamati have been selected in the U16's State side this year to tour at Nudgee College in Brisbane. Jacob Townrow has also been selected for the National Talent Squad.
Congratulations to
Mason Maloney, Cory Garner, Daniel Long, Liam McIntyre and Philip Patterson.
For making the U/14 State Team that beat South Australia 76 - 3.
2008 Season
Tyrrell best in State / 2008 Award Recipients
Rockingham Rugby Union Club’s Ryan Tyrrell has been voted Western Australian fairest and best player for the 2008 season.
At the RugbyWA presentation night held at Burswood recently, Tyrrell received the prestigious award to a standing ovation from assembled clubs and RugbyWA management.
This caps a fantastic year for Tyrrell who was by far the most outstanding player in the Premier grade competition with his trademark barging runs, devastating tackling and team leadership.
After losing most of the 2007 season due to a foot injury, which also meant he was no longer able to take his place in the Western Force Academy, Ryan turned down offers to play in Europe so he could put in a good season at Rockingham.
An injury free run and complete dedication to his chosen sport, has taken Ryan to the top level of rugby in WA once again.
Geoff Minson, also from the Rockingham club polled very well in the fairest and best awards also.
Tyrrell’s recognition has topped off a great year for the Rockingham Club.
The Premier side have moved two spots up the ladder and pushed close to finals contention, they were only one of two teams to defeat the eventual Grand Final winners Kalamunda, and they defeated Nedlands at their home ground for the first time in the club’s history.
Prop Kieran Longbottom signed a fulltime professional Western Force contract, Brendan O’Dea was included in the Western Force academy and both Longbottom and James Dougal toured England with the Western Force.

Two Rockingham players have made the 38 man Perth Gold squad for the 2012 season.
Local product AJ Smith joins Rockingham new boy Rhys Peakman in the revamped program.
Smith a former Rockingham junior has played at state level through the ranks of the WA system and was selected in the inaugural Force academy before spending time playing in Europe.
While Peakman having played in New Zealand and the UK brought a wealth of experience to Rockingham in his first season for the club he made an impact and his selection is a refection of his ability.
The Perth Gold squad will play three games on home soil as well as embark on a three game tour to the East Coast in February and March next year.
Training will commence in November in preparation for the matches in February and March in 2012.
