Information
Entries cost just £5 with half the money raised paid out to the winner and the rest will be help the Scoreboard fundraising appeal. Please support this, even if you have no real interest (or even knowledge) in the subject. The competition runs until the 16th March and if you can ‘sell’ the competition to friends, relatives, other halves, etc. It would be much appreciated. We don’t expect to make a huge sum, but it’s all a help! The scores will be regularly posted here.
We need entries in before this Saturday, and these can be emailed to
davehowarth11@googlemail.com. Any entries received after Friday 25th will not score points from any races run before receipt. No entries will be accepted after 30 November 2011. If you do sell any entries we will need your help to ensure we receive the entry fees promptly.
The Competition
Participants need to select 10 horses from the attached list (if you can’t open the list contact me as soon as possible). One from the eight stable stars at the top and a further nine from the main list. The scoring works like this:
- 10 points each time one of your horses wins in GB or Ireland with extra points given if your winner is 3/1 or bigger - the bigger the odds of a winner the more points you get, to a maximum of a further 25.
- There are also a number of bonus races (see below) where if your nag wins and you get 25 points & 10 points if your nag is 2nd.
The winner will be deemed as the person with the highest aggregate number of points from their selections at the end of the competition.

A new leader has found his way to the top in the shape of Norfolk N Chance. Well done Mr Chance. Most people's points were scored this week with Big Bucks facile victory at Ascot on Saturday ...... I thought before the comp started that selecting him was "far too obvious". However, being one of the only entrants who didn't select him, I am now being made to pay for that schoolboy error by being nudged down the table week on week ! I am just pleased to have some points .... unlike the remaining five who have yet to trouble the scorer.
After a very busy period of racing over the last week or so, there has been some quite dramatic movement on the Leader Board since the last update .... well, by some entrants anyway! Congratulations to all you first time scorers since the last update .... and bad luck to those 2 gents who are still waiting to get off the mark! If it wasn't for Overturn scoring in Week 1, yours truly would also be wallowing right down there.
Cheers for this Dave - much appreciated.
As long as that little git doesn't beat me again.
I have now updated the spreadsheet after a bit of a lull since Christmas. Both James Bradbury and Ian Thorne have now broken 10 points clear of their nearest rivals after Celestial Halo's good win yesterday. I am beginning to wonder if Celestial now has a chance in the big one at Cheltenham come March, after he really did look as though he had gone at the game last season.
The spreadsheet has now been updated further since last weekends results. And guess what? Yes that (not so) little man James Bradbury has been firing in the winners yet again ...... this week Calgary Bay & Hurricane Fly both obliged for him to take him a full 25 points clear of Ian Thorne, who also had another winner. I must also congratulate Mick Ward and Dave Mesfin who also found a winner apiece this week.......... so now we have no one without a single point. I'm not sure if anyone else can beat this, but I had Overturn on day one of the competition to score me 25 points......... at which point I was thinking "This game is too easy!" ... Just look at my record since then ...... nothing, zero, zilch, nada. Oh well, roll on Cheltenham ! Be lucky everyone. Steady Eddie.
Looking at the sheet again, James Bradbury didn't actually have Calgary Bay, but I have checked his points and they are correct. It was Mike Wright and Waltons Waltzers who had Calgary Bay & they are either side of James on the sheet. I am now that used to James scoring points and so often, I jumped to the conclusion he had done it again. I have just scanned over the spreadsheet & it all looks ok to me. Anyhow, if anyone does spot anything obviously wrong then don't hesitate to contact me - I am getting on a bit, you know! Cheers. Steady Eddie
Apologies for not updating where we are in the Jumps Competition until now.. Anyhow, we still have James Bradbury at the top.. So no real surprise there. Like a number of others, he scored with Binocular again, but also managed to sneak a further 10 points with Get Me Out Of Here. Dave Manton has done very well again recently and has joined James at the head of affairs. I have also been told that I must also give a mention to Chemicals Carthorses as they have been consistently in the top five throughout ! (Happy now?). Another recent high scorer who is possibly beginning to worry the leaders (apart from guru James Bradbury!) is the Slut Nun (whoever she is?!). She has rocketed from right up to 12th equal after languishing down there with us who I am told cannot tip sand. Thanks for that comment Wiz. .......... Steady Eddie.
Before we head into the second biggest week of the year (and the culmination of this competition) I have once again updated the spreadsheet. You will see there is very little movement indeed in the leaders list. This is simply because most of the top class horses have been having their well earned rest before Cheltenham. You may note that Chris B, Slut Nun and Shy Tot have 2 points less than they had in the previous update. I think that was my fault as I wrongly gave Donna's Palm 20 pts for his win at Navan last month. That 20 should have been 18 pts, according to the William Hill's website. Anyhow, as I will be very busy studying, watching and (on some days sipping) and some days supping next week. So, I promise I will try to get the spreadsheet updated and posted to the website by about next Sunday evening (hangover permitting!) with the long awaited result. The very best of luck to all of you for Cheltenham next week ...... Let the best man (or indeed woman or child!) win. ............. Steady Eddie
After day two of Cheltenham, we have 2 contestants who have broken the 200 point barrier. Excellent stuff from Dave Manton & Steve McGrail. James Bradbury drops to third. His uncle Chris is now right behind him in fourth & remarkably Business Time really does mean business now by leaping into the top five from mid-table mediocrity. The competition draws its final breath with the last race at Cheltenham on Friday, so best of luck to you all for tomorrow and Gold Cup day. Unlike me ................ stay lucky !! Steady Eddie
So guys & gals. It's all over. What a fantastic competition we have had and a great Cheltenham. I declare Dave Manton the winner - and a very worthy one at that. To win it without having Big Bucks or Synchronised really was going some, I thought. So very well done to him. I will be trying to catch up with him soon and try get a photo of me paying him out and get it on the website. For those of you who don't know Dave, he is a pal of Hobbo & Karl Blackburn's and, as you might have guessed, knows a fair bit about the nags! Very well done aswell to all the top five especially Chemical - I think if Pricewise handn't flagged up Synchronised for the Gold Cup, he would have been a bigger price and Chemical may have just pipped Mr Manton. Hard lines to young James aswell - a definite winner for the future. Also to my pal Steve McGrail at work who has been right up there for most of the comp. If we do this next year, I will probably allow prize money down to 5th and may even have a wooden spoon for some poor devil at the end of it all. Thanks to all of you for having a go and helping the Club to work towards fitting out the new scorebox. Have a great Aintree !! Steady Eddie.
I have now met up with Dave Manton, congratulated him, and paid him his winnings. I have also uploaded a photo of me & him taken this evening. He has very kindly restricted his winnings to £100 (instead of £117.50). We had 47 entrants and so £235 was the total entrance money. So, the Club will now receive £135 towards the scorebox appeal. Thanks again to all those who took part. Steady Eddie.
