HISTORY OF THE CENTRAL MIDLANDS LEAGUE AND ROLLS ROYCE LEISURE FOOTBALL CLUB

The Central Midlands Football League is an English football league covering the northeast-central part of England. Formed in 1971 as the South Derbyshire League, changing name initially to the Derbyshire League before taking on its current name in 1983, it covers Derbyshire, Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire and South Yorkshire. Since the 2004-05 season, their principal sponsor has been Abacus Lighting.

The number of divisions has varied over time as follows

1983-1984 - three divisions: Supreme, Premier First and Premier
1984-1985 - three divisions: Central, Premier First and Premier
1985-1986 - two divisions: Central and Premier
1986-1987 - three divisions: Supreme, Premier and First
1987-1988 to 1989-1990 - two divisions: Supreme and Premier
1990-1991 - three divisions: supreme, Premier and First
1991-1992 - three divisions: supreme, Premier North and Premier South
1993-1994 to present - two divisions: Premier and Supreme
Within the English football league system, the Central Midlands League's top division, called the Supreme Division, is considered part of the National League System (at Step 7), while the lower Premier Division (at the twelfth overall tier of the pyramid) and two reserve divisions are not. Four clubs from the Premier Division have the distinction of being the lowest-ranked clubs, and only ones outside the NLS, accepted for the 2006-07 FA Vase.

Buckingham Insurance sponsor the Supreme Division, Vipond Fire Protection the Premier Division, and "Lee's" sponsor the Reserve Premier Division and 15-team Reserve Division One.

Champions of the Supreme Division are eligible (if they meet ground standards) for promotion to the Northern Counties East League, and some clubs have progressed from the CML to the Football Conference North and Northern Premier League. A representative side from the league takes part in the FA National League System Cup.

Six local leagues are below the CML on the pyramid. These are the Midlands Regional Alliance, the Humber Premier League, the Nottinghamshire Senior League, the Doncaster and District Senior League, the Sheffield and Hallamshire County Senior League, and the Chesterfield and District Amateur League. In most cases these have multiple divisions or feeder leagues of their own.

For the 2008-09 season, eight of the leading sides will leave the Central Midlands League to join forces with eight clubs from the Leicestershire Senior League to form a new league at Step 6 of the National League System.

HISTORY OF ROLLS ROYCE LEISURE FOOTBALL CLUB

Football clubs using the name Rolls Royce have played at the Hucknall site since 1935 when the factory first opened its gates, however, in those early days they only competed in the Notts Amateur and combination levels, that was until John Hemment and the late Philip Creswell took a Rolls side to the old Midlands League First Division before becoming founding members of the Northern Counties East League. In the mid seventies before the club disbanded making way for the current club.
After starting out in the East Midlands Regional League we moved to the Notts Alliance in 1983 and under the management team of Dave Tilford and Ken Knighton won the first division title in 1988 at which time Rick Bentley took over as manager, in his first season he saw this side lose in the Semi-finals of the Notts Senior Cup, however success soon followed winning the leagues senior cup in the very next season. In 1993 after a succession of mid table finishes in the senior division, Roger Dawkins took over as manager.
The following seasons saw us finish 8th, 4th and 3rd before a decision to progress into the Central Midlands Premier Division at the same time we joined forces with our Junior Section forming one clubbing compromising of 17 teams and a soccer school for five to eight year olds. In the early days the amalgamation paid dividends with the erection of a stand and senior side finishing runners up and gaining promotion to the Supreme Division. Unfortunately, due to financial reasons, the seniors and juniors agreed to run as separate clubs again from 2000.
At the end of the 2000-01 season the committee resigned on bloc making way for a new management team and committee chaired by John Hemment. The first team control was taken by joint manager Tony Johnson and Phil Towle who despite off field problems, steered Rolls to second in the league, denied promotion only by lack of facilities. After losing Manager Phil Towle and many players in the previous close season in came Joint Managers John Cheetham and Billy Miller. Rolls struggled to make an impact during the first 16 games of the 2003 / 04 season but a brave revival lifted them off the bottom of the Central Midlands Supreme League towards the end of the campaign.
Despite a promising start to the 2004 / 2005, Rolls finished in a relegation position but were saved by the facilities at the ground and the relegation of Clubs without Floodlights. Rolls had a bad start to the 2005 / 2006 season under Manager Horace Francis. John Cheetham then decided that something needed to change and brought in Ex-Hucknall Town player Craig Maddison. John and Craig as joint managers ran the side who were left with only 1 point in October 2005, the combination of Maddison and Cheetham combined with new signings saw Rolls results pick up and finish clear of the relegation places.
The 2006-2007 season saw the club finish in 9th place which looked a great stepping stone for success the following season, but the decision of Maddison to move to Gedling MW firstly as a player and then eventually as Manager saw a defection of players with him and the need for a re-build for the 07/08 season. A big positive for the future of the club was the establishment of an under 19 academy side in 2007, under the management of Chris Carrington and Keith Thompson. This has already borne fruit with a number of players already progressing through to the first team ranks. Cheetham brought in the experienced duo of Steve Clifford and Dave Bradshaw to the management team but at first team level it was always going to be difficult with a host of young new players settling in and despite a late season rally the club finished in 18th place, 3 from bottom.
Fortunately due to league re-structuring there was no relegation at the end of the season and the club line up against a number of new teams in the CML Supreme Division this season. Bradshaw decided to move on and Carrington stepped up to assist Cheetham and Clifford as well as continuing his academy management role. The club have also entered the FA Vase this season after a gap of a couple of years and the Academy side will compete in the FA Youth Cup.
