Our team of U6’s & U7’s made the trip to Harlow this weekend. The opening game involved the older boys and was very keenly contested. As the season has gone on, the work the players are putting in during training is really starting to show in their passing skills, and there were some lovely passages of inter-play resulting in very good tries.
Liam and Aidan thrived on the large pitch and with their pace were able to find gaps in the defence within only a couple of phases of play, allowing them to score 2 each. Dylan Wood
, another who benefits from good speed, also had room enough to round the defence and run the length of the pitch to score. As we found at our Festival though, Harlow have very good players in attack that evened the score up at will, and the game finished 5 – 5.
Our younger players played the same side in the 2nd match and found the going a little harder. Credit to Harlow and their coaches for keeping the games as even as possible, allowing all the boys to compete and enjoy the game though. Henry, Rhys and Bailey were all keen to take their tags and defend, while Warren and Charles showed some encouraging running angles and footwork. Liam and Jacob came on to help our youngsters at half time allowing Liam picked up another 2 tries with the game finishing 8 – 2.
Back to the U7’s for the 3rd game of 4, and another end-to-end game that had both sets of coaches and parents applauding some very enjoyable rugby. After a run from Liam, Dylan ran on to a pass at pace and broke straight through defence, only getting tagged inches from the line. And when he showed the composure to still pass the ball after coming so close, Nathan was tagged by an off-side player and awarded a well earned penalty try. Aidan made the tag of the day by closing down Harlow’s best player on the wing and taking a diving one handed tag, and was rewarded straight afterwards by scoring in the corner. With Liam grabbing his 5th of the day and Nathan also scoring his second, Romford were unlucky to lose 5 – 4.
The last game saw our hosts graciously rest their star players and our U6’s were able to enjoy a much more even contest. Young Charles was the pick with some brilliant running, earning him a hat-trick of tries, and Warren added a 4th after running a huge loop round everyone to score in the corner. Thomas and Alfie both came very close to scoring themselves, with just one too many bodies in the way of the try line for them to get the ball down. Henry and Rhys showed yet more encouraging ball skills and inter-play as well.
WELL DONE ALL (and get well soon Bradders, from all of us!)
