The U7s ‘A’ team faced Rochford in the first of their 4 pool games, and what a game to open the festival. We barely had time to line-up before being a try down, and the pace of the game renamed furious through-out. On what was a very small playing area both sides found it difficult to defend, managing to take only a couple of tags before being close to the try line. It was going to come down to which team didn’t score with their possession, and Rochford squeezed out a 7 - 6 win.
The next game was against Chingford and now our young stars had settled down, they began to show some of the great team work and handling skills that had proven them hard to beat many times this season. Joe and Dylan continued to step their way through the defence, Liam and Aiden constantly in support and picking up tries, while Bradley worked tirelessly in defence tagging everyone within reach (went on to take the most tags on the day). Romford ran out 8 - 3 winners.
By game 3, Jacob and Harry had now also joined the list of scorers, showing that every member of the team knows the way to the try-line. There were a lot more forced errors in this game against Burnham, largely part to strong defence from our boys. Whenever Burnham found space on the wings, Dylan and Joe used their pace to close them down, with Bradley, Liam and Jacob mopping up the tags through the middle. The game was close, but Romford finished ahead, 7 -5.
The last pool game was much more 1-sided and once in front, Romford took the chance to put some rehearsed moves into practise against Eton Manor. The pick of which was a pivot move, with Dylan spinning a great long pass out to the waiting hands of Joe, who will not be stopped with space in front of him. Liam and Bradley added to their tally of tries, and the final score was 6 – 1
Due to losing the opening game, Romford ‘A’ finished 2nd in their Pool, and went through to the Plate final where we faced Harlow. Despite all their best efforts, they came up against an outstanding individual who scored no less than 6 solo tries, and with a Harlow defence that never seemed to be less than a foot in front of our players, errors were made and turn-over’s frequent. We lost the final 7 – 2, with both consolation tries coming from Joe along with 2 others from Liam being disallowed, but our little stars cheered up when presented with their runner-up medals and trophy by Nick Easter. WELL DONE EVERYONE!!
