County Plate Runners Up
Wasps find form to reach Plate final, but Alton just too good for a tired team.
Romsey Wasps Under 9s came so close to winning the Hampshire County Championship Plate on Sunday. On a firm pitch and in glorious sunshine Wasps qualified for the Plate from a tough group including Winchester, Ellingham & Ringwood, Fareham Barbarians and Portsmouth.
The Quarter Final saw a rematch after last years County Final with Vectis(Isle of Wight) providing tough opposition. Jack Rymer battled for every ball, and Ben Cole got the ball out quickly allowing Alex Mills to score a brace of tries, including a last minute winner. Petersfield provided the semi final opposition, with Luke Taylor Blake scoring a wonderful try after beating half the opposition on his way to the line. Slick passing by Ross Kirkwood and Ben Jenden made space for a Mills hat-trick as Wasps romped home 4-1.
The Final proved a game too far as Wasps ran themselves into the ground with Max Vennik tackling superbly and Brandon Biddle and Thomas Croft Baker competing for every ball. Alton got two early tries, and then took advantage as Wasps chanced their arm late on, Alton taking the trophy 4-0.
Earlier in qualifying Wasps ran in six tries against the Fareham Barbarians, with two for Niall Whitehorn, and some great play by Joe Madigan and Liam Palmerino. Portsmouth just squeezed out Wasps 2-1, despite Kyle McGhee's strong mauling.
The Tournament Special Individual Award went to Wasps Jake Rowland who, as well as playing fantastically well, was judged by organisers to be the most sporting player of the day. Jake will spend a day at Twickenham training with England star Lawrence Dallaglio as his prize.
