Market Drayton completed a League double over Romulus with a goal in each half, Marvin Johnson’s late penalty was scant consolation.
Confidence was high at Coles Lane, Romulus have put an excellent run of form together at home but the visitors showed no fear as they returned to the ground which saw their best win of the season in December against Sutton.
Drayton set their intentions out early, Tom Rogers crossing for Martyn Davies who was denied the opener by a fine Chris Jay save.
Romulus replied, Nathan Blissett headed down for Ashley Jackson who cleared the crossbar and Liam Francis went closer when he got the end of a Rob Evans long throw but visiting keeper Damian Stevens saved.
Home keeper Jay was on the end of some brutal challenges, none more so than on the half hour mark, Nicky Porter’s corner saw the home stopper clattered by both centre backs leaving Jay needing extensive treatment.
Despite plenty of promise Romulus fell asleep in the closing stages of the first half leaving the visitors to take full advantage, Porter scored the opener with four minutes to play after he was given too much time to pick his spot into the far corner from 25 yards. Rogers almost made it two a few minutes later but his shot from close range cannoned back off the crossbar.
Jay was withdrawn at half time still feeling the effects from the first half with bruised ribs and concussion , Lewis Exall replaced him between the sticks.
Exall’s first contribution kept Romulus in the game, Rogers was allowed to get to the by-line and cut back for Kyle Blake but the young keeper produced a fine save.
Romulus should have levelled soon after, Johnson’s free kick found Sean Robinson at the back post, the defender beat the keeper with a scuffed effort but the ball came back off the post and was hacked away.
Still chances went begging, substitute Charisma Agbonlahor, who injected some much needed life into the home side’s play fizzed a cross across the box which eluded everyone and Jackson did the same soon after.
Romulus were made to pay as Drayton made it two with eight minutes to play, the much travelled Dorryl Proffit was allowed to cut inside and pick his spot into the corner.
There was still time for one final incident, Agbonlahor again looking sharp as he latched onto a sloppy back pass, Drayton keeper Stevens hauled him down leaving the ref no option but to award a penalty and dismiss Stevens, replacement keeper Andrew Pryce replaced Porter but Pryce could do nothing as Johnson beat him from 12 yards.
There was littler time remaining, Romulus forced one corner but it was wasted in a move that summed up the day.
Must do better is the instruction now for Romulus who head into a tricky February still nervously looking over their shoulder.
Next week it’s a trip to Newcastle Town who themselves will be looking to react from a defeat against Shepshed.
