Not for the first time this season, Romulus dropped vital points with the clock on 90 minutes as Newcastle claimed a 1-1 draw
Roms looked set to end their recent poor form and complete a League double over Newcastle before Sam Hart struck an equaliser from the spot.
Romulus made attacking changes to the starting line up with Charisma Agbonlahor starting up front with Nathan Blissett.
The attacking mentality appeared to work with the Roms starting on the front foot, Ashley Jackson beating two defenders inside the opening five minutes before his cross was deflected behind.
A fine Agbonlahor cross was met by Theo Robinson but Dave Payton was equal to Robinson’s header, Harry Clayton tested Lee Evans in the visitors goal from distance before a powerful surge through from Blissett saw him clear the crossbar.
The game was finely balanced with both sides creating chances Ryan Connor was denied by an excellent Evans save with a vicious shot at the far post.
Romulus were almost gifted the lead when Andy Nicholls got in a mess with Payton, Blissett and Agbonlahor both charged in but the bounce was kind for Newcastle and eventually the ball was cleared.
The warning signs were there and it was a poor defensive header which created the opener, Jackson the grateful recipient picking the ball up 25 yards out and picking his spot beyond the keeper into the top corner.
The home side went for it making attacking changes while the Roms front two who worked tirelessly throughout were replaced as Roms looked to see the game out.
There were a couple of scares, Darren Twigg’s shot blocked by Phil Male and the rebound also blocked as the home crowd screamed for a penalty.
In one final twist they were awarded a lifeline, Clayton hitting the floor under minimal contact after Aaron Carter’s looped ball into the box, the referee eventually deciding to point to the spot and Hart made no mistake from 12 yards to share the spoils.
A win would have virtually guaranteed safety but a point still leaves Romulus nervously looking over their shoulder, it’s back to Coles Lane this Saturday when play of chasers Stamford are the visitors.
