Pre-season title favourites Ilkeston moved up to 3rd in the only game of the day on the 3G surface. The scoreline was perhaps harsh on Romulus who were more than a match for the high flyers until two quick goals before the break changed the game
Cameron Lee passed a fitness test to enable him to start and Charisma Agbonlahor was given his first start of the season.
Both sides produced some good football early on and there were plenty of chances, Ashley Jackson cutting in from the left and planting his shot just wide of the Ilkeston post.
Agbonlahor also went close next as the visitors struggled to deal with a ball into the box, Nathan Blissett headed back but the strikers shot was inches wide with the keeper beaten.
Ilkeston also had their chances, the dangerous Gary Ricketts linking up with Jack Watts who missed the target. A cross from Watts found Josh Hill well placed but his header went wide of the post.
On 33 minutes, Romulus should have gone in front, Agbonlahor did well to dig a cross out from wide on the right and it found Blissett who looked certain score but his header just cleared the crossbar. The visitors went straight down the other end and Ricketts crossed for Watts who was denied the opener by a smart save from Lewis Exall.
The game turned as the visitors struck twice before the break, Watts volleying in the opener after the ball wasn’t cleared and Joe Maguire doubling the advantage with a right footed drive which went in via the post.
Romulus almost reduced the arrears in first half stoppage time, Lee’s corner was left by Ryan Wilson at the near post and the ball hit the post before Ilkeston cleared.
Any chances of a comeback were quickly destroyed when Ilkeston added a third, Sam Duncum curling in a fine effort from 25 yards into the top corner.
The goal killed the game off as a contest and visibly knocked the stuffing out of Romulus, all three subs were used to try to inject some life but Ilkeston stood firm.
Blissett almost got one back when he got round ‘keeper Ben Cathercole but he was just forced wide enough and eventually the ball was cleared.
Ilkeston rubbed more misery on the hosts with fifteen minutes to play, a lighting quick break from a Romulus corner left them with two men over, James Reid left with the simple task of slotting home to cap a fine away day for them.
Romulus look to pick themselves up, next week it’s a trip to Rainworth MW.
