As expected, a slope, wind and 90 minutes defending the long ball met the Main in Worsbrough. After a positive and encouraging start the Main were unable to hang onto a lead late on and go out of the League cup.
The Main had Hatton and Holvey missing through work and Pendleton out with injury, coming in were Rowley, Batchelor and the returning Jepson.
The Main made a superb start, creating a couple of half chances. Then on 6 minutes, Billam rolled the ball in to Hilton who spun and hit a brilliant shot inside the near post from just outside the penalty area.
The Main continued to make chances and dominated possession. A few attacks from Worsbrough threatened, Appleby making two good saves with his feet.
On 42mins, a ball down the middle seperated the Mains defence allowing the striker in to score!
The second half saw the main battling up hill against the wind, expecting plenty of aerial ball to deal with. On 56mins, Stokes drove down the middle of the field and was brought down outside the area. Holmes placed the ball and struck well over the wall, the keeper should have saved it but made a mess of it and it found the back of the net.
From then on, the main were forced to do a lot of defending. Worsbrough had several half chances and a miss from 3 yards over the top. The main hung on until 87 mins when a ball over the top and a defensive error allowed the winger in to winish well.
With extra time looming, another big long ball was allowed to bounce and was missed. The winger again stole in and rounded Appleby to finish.
Unlike Saturday, The Main didn't show the concentration and stability to hang onto small leads..
