Earlier this month, Rotherham Clifton were awarded £700 by the South Yorkshire Management Board, from the South Yorkshire Development Fund.

The funds will be used to help the club with recruiting and retaining players and to reinvigorate the clubs age grade section.

Over recent months, Rotherham Clifton have been working hard of the field to drive the club forward. Part of this process has been to formulate a club development plan, which has been carried out through working with the RFU Rugby Development Officer for South Yorkshire. As part of the planning process, the club has developed an Action Plan to help with the recruitment of new Senior and Age Grade players.

Following the planning process, a small action group was created in order to bid for funds from the South Yorkshire Development Fund. Ron Wood, who was the driving force behind the clubs bid, was assisted by Ash Bell and Martyn Gammons, saw the bid accepted and was able to secure £700 for the clubs efforts, which is the largest amount to be awarded to a single club, since the fund started 3 years ago.

The funding will be used to help with the recruitment of new players and to help the club develop its Age Grade Section. Plans are already in place to begin qualifying coaches from within the club, who will assist with the running of Junior Coaching sessions. The club is also in the process of pulling together the finer details of its recruitment plan, which they hope to put into action over the coming weeks.

Ron Wood, who led the funding bid, commented ‘The award will help us to rebuild our club playing membership  by reinvigorating the scope of our age groups, delivering the next generation of rugby players.’

A delighted club Chairman, Phil Ashton, added ‘This is a marvellous achievement for the club, especially with the fact that this is the largest sum that has been awarded from the fund, and a massive thank you has to go to Ron and his team for their hard work. A lot of effort is being put in off the field at the moment and this is just one step in the club starting to reap the rewards.’
