ROTHERHAM HOCKEY CLUB LADIES SECTION HISTORY

The core of the original Rotherham Ladies came from R.M.O., a successful team that played in the Sheffield & District Women's Hockey League (now Sheffield & District Women's Hockey Association {SDWHA}).

When Rotherham Men's and Wickersley Men's Hockey Teams amalgamated, this group were asked to form Rotherham and Wickersley Ladies and did so in the early 1970's.

This was a single team club that were very successful winning the SDWHA League in 1974, 1977, 1978, 1979, 1980, 1981, 1982, 1983, 1984,1985. This team then played in the North League before coming back into SDWHA when they won the League again in 1992, 1996, 1998, 1999, 200, 2001 and 2003. Some of that successful team are still involved in the club in 2011: Lesley Tew (Chair and Player), Lynn Robinson (Secretary and Head Coach) and Julie Rayner (player).

Other ex-club members who went on to progress within the England Hockey System are Jane Powell ,England Hockey Development Coach and Miranda McTaggart (formerly Thicket) who has played for the England Veterans Team.

In 1996 the Ladies became Rotherham Ladies and began closer liaisons with Rotherham Men. In the early 2000 they also formed a 2nd team and some of these players in 2011 are still playing for the Ladies 1st team: Emma Hughes, Hannah Philips and Laura Lee.

The 2nd team continued the run of successes in SDWHA and won the league 2004, 2005, 2008, and 2010, where they were then promoted to North League Division 2 East and played in this league for 3 seasons.

Both teams were successful in the SDWHA Cup Competition the 1st team winning in 1979, 1980, 1981, 1982, 1983, 1984, 1988, 1992, 1993, 1991, 2004, 2005, 2006 and the 2nd team winning in 2008, 2009.

The Ladies then formed a 3rd team (development squad), aimed at bringing on the Youth players into Senior Hockey. This team has regularly developed players who have gone on to play in the 1st and 2nd teams
