The girls first game of the day saw them face close rivals (skill wise) Ben Rhydding, a game that created very little chances unsurprisingly finished 0-0.
Rotherham had a quick turnaround as their next game was against South Yorkshire rivals, Doncaster. This game proved to be much more entertaining than the first, with end to end possession hockey being played. Lucy Cooke looked like opening the score line within the first 30seconds, she rounded numerous Doncaster girls and got her shot off cleanly, only for it to be saved by the keeper. The game was back and forth from then on, Helen Chapman
, Emma Bray and Bethany Roper
all coming close to netting. Unfortunately a lapse in concentration just 2 minutes from time saw Doncaster storm down the middle of the pitch and slot the ball past a stranded Emily McCarthy in goal. There was no time for Rotherham to come back and Doncaster took all three points from the game.
After a much needs one hour break the girl faced their final group opponents, York. Games against York have always been a close affair, and after they knocked Rotherham out of the semi-finals on penalty strokes last year, the girls still had this image in their heads as the whistle went. Rotherham didn’t get off to the strongest of starts and York came close on numerous occasions, however the Aurora side pulled it together as Amanda Thickett pushed them up the pitch, the ball played out the Jade Hamer on the right saw her run down the wing with it and around the back of the York defence, Hamer crossed the ball to Cooke on the penalty spot who tapped it on for Roper to slot home at the back post. Both sides worked hard for the remainder of the game but Rotherham managed to hold onto their 1-0 lead.
A win, a draw and a loss wasn’t quite enough to get the girls through to the semi’s this year, however, considering the majority of the team are still under 14 they have had a fantastic season and show promise in the years to come.
Well done girls!
A huge thank you needs to go out to all the family who take the players to venues across Yorkshire week in week out for their Yorkshire Youth League fixtures!
