Report By Rosy Underwood Rotherham ladies 2nd XI faced tough opponents Epworth at home at the weekend.
Both teams started well, however it was the visitors that opened the score-line within the first minute of the game. Despite this, Rotherham’s focus began to deepen and they set their minds on the game at hand, scoring two consecutive goals. Both goals came from long corners and in similar fashion. A Kodie Grand pass into the D that was picked up beautifully by Lesley Tew who neatly crossed it to the back post where Sam Spencer was waiting to put the ball in the back of the net. After Rotherham's two successive goals the play was split very evenly, both sides displayed some great hockey narrowly missing the chance to extend their tally. Epworth struggled to get past the strong Rotherham defence of Kate Evans, Gina Bagley and Jess Rowan, whereas they themselves could not keep their composure in the Epworth D. Ironically, Rotherham’s third goal was the result of an Epworth counter attack, a skilful clearance from Rowan to Spencer, who dribbled around the keeper and coolly netted, 3-1. Rotherham’s final goal of the first half was scored by Tew, she received the ball after great link up play from defence through midfield and smashed her shot past the Epworth keeper.
After the half time break Rotherham struggle to keep up the hard work against a constantly rotating Epworth side, resulting in a short corner for Epworth who had no qualms in converting it. Several more short corners were given in Epworth’s favour, but were all successfully defended. After numerous fighting attempts the ball landed nicely for Tew, who once again netted. Epworth did pull another back just before the full time whistle, although it was not enough for the visitor’s to take any points home with them.
A good game for Rotherham ladies seconds, who deserved the strong win.
