Rotherham 1s vs Bradford

Match report by Fraser Andrews

Rotherham played host to top of the league Bradford, with a few players missing Rotherham still had a strong side out ready for a hard fought game.

The game started off very balanced with both teams having a fair share of possession early on, but neither team really making use of their time on the ball the opening stages of the game were played without either team having any chances to penetrate the opposition’s circle. The deadlock was finally broken after Rotherham made use of the ball in the left corner working the ball between several players allowing Ricky ‘Gummy Bear’ Benton to have the ball at the top of the circle with enough time to pick his spot to give Rotherham the lead. The game then became a counter attacking game with each team gaining control of the ball and charging down to the other end of the pitch. Bradford made good use of this taking advantage of catching a player out of position leading to a 4 on 3 at the Rotherham end, where despite some strong defensive play the advantage was forced home with Bradford gaining an equaliser. Bradford gained a second shortly after where they picked up a loose ball after a Rotherham error in a dangerous area of the pitch. Bradford added to their lead just before half time where a Bradford forward picked the pocket of a Rotherham defended allowing for an overload of attacking players lead to a free hit within the Rotherham 25, after a well worked set play Rotherham found themselves 3-1 down at half time.

After some strong words from James ’Blackadder’ Thomas and John ‘Steve Carell’ Bray at half time Rotherham came out in the second half looking determined and playing the ball around the pitch well. Bradford were unable to get possession long enough to really create any chances in the second half as Rotherham were working hard and tackling back. Rotherham were also making good use of the ball creating chances but unable to convert. Rotherham finally clawed one back after a well worked short corner played from Fraser ’F.A.T’ Andrews at top D to James ‘Johnny English’ Thomas who found Fraser ‘loud mouth’ Henderson for his first Rotherham league goal this season. Rotherham continued to press creating a more chances and having a shot cleared from the line by some brave defending. The score stayed at 3-2 until the final whistle with Rotherham unable to convert and Bradford playing for time whenever they had possession of the ball. Rotherham battled hard against the league leaders and should be very proud of their second half performance.
