Away Win for the Mens 2's
Report from Lee Dodge (who has set a world record for the largest number of cliches in a single report!)
4 goals of the highest quality saw Rotherham 2nd team ease past Airedale to take 3 points from their opening game of the league season.
Travelling with a squad of 12 made up of a vast mixing pot of experience and youth, and sporting a changed kit of all white, Rotherham created sporadic spells of good hockey in the first half and hit the post twice from Lee Dodge and Connor Ward respectively and had a short corner, linking Brothers Lee and ross dodge, which culminated in Lee Dodge deflecting his brothers effort goalward only to see it cleared off the line.
Eventually, Rotherham's possession told and they took the lead through a dazzling, Connor Ward reverse stick shot across goal and screaming into the top right corner of the goal to give the visitors a 1-0 lead at half time.
After identifying a need for an increase in the tempo of the hockey and work rate, Rotherham started the 2nd half like a bat out of hell and stunned the home side by doubling the lead within 30 seconds through another fantastic reverse stick shot emphatically smashing into the home goal from Lee Dodge leaving the home teams players and supporters stunned into silence.
Shortly after, the South Yorkshire side were temporarily, reduced to 10 men when Webb was shown a yellow card for persistent fouling, much to the disgust of the shaven headed midfielder. However, this did not disrupt the tactics of the visitors nor give the home side any significant advantage. Despite having a 10 minute spell of pressure, they posed no threat to Rimmington’s goal.
In fact, like the big bad wolf meeting the little piggy in a brick house, they huffed and puffed but could not blow Rotherham's defensive unit down.
After seeing out the short period of pressure, Rotherham ended the tie as a contest when, yet another reverse stick shot found its way in from a Rob Owen effort to give the visitors 3 goals and 3 points.
Unfortunately the 3rd goal brought the ugly face of hockey as, for a short period, the lunatics took control of the asylum and some very questionable tackles and actions resulting in both sets of players embarking on a vicious, downward spiral of frustration and aggression. Eventually, the umpires regained control and a period of good hockey broke out.
With seconds to go, Rob Owen tapped in at the back post putting the finishing touch to a nice move started by Man of the Match, Ricky Benton.
Overall, a good start to the league season. But it is only a start.
There are lots of positives to take from the game, as well of some areas to develop on the training pitch, however, the initial signs are good as the team showed that they can dictate the tempo of a game to control and dissect teams as a unit to win the smaller battles across the pitch to win the war.
