Rotherham unchallenged by Leeds
RHC v's Leeds 5's
This week Rotherham hosted Leeds 5th team, a team they'd had tough battles with in previous years and their club's 4th team were the team that were relegated alongside Rotherham last season so a tight game was expected. The sun was shining on what was an uncharacteristically warm mid-October Saturday afternoon. With several players unavailable Rotherham only had 1 substitute, so when Leeds arrived with a squad of 14 players, the majority of which were students, there was a sense of panic amongst the home side.
The pre game talk was brief; play simple hockey and keep the ball, let them chase it. As basic as it was it worked perfectly. The game got underway with a Leeds push back, after intercepting it within seconds Rotherham passed the ball back to defence and a 5 minute spell of possession followed. The Leeds defensive press had huge gaps, so in possession Rotherham pushed forward. It didn't take long for the goals to start flowing and as Leeds chased the game, Rotherham soon found themselves 4-0 up.
At half time the home sides focus was around not conceding over increasing the lead. However, even with that target the goal tally mounted up and before long in form Forward Jack Hartley had netted 4 as had returning player Lee Dodge. Leeds caused little trouble in the game and with further goals from Matt Webb, josh towers and Ben Davis Rotherham were flying at 11-0. With minutes to go Leeds were awarded a penalty corner, which slipped by Tony Cooper in the net to give them a consolation goal.
