Disappointment for Men's 3's
Saturday saw RHC Men's 3's host Boston Spa 2's at Aurora, A side well known for their physical and aggressive approach to hockey. The men's 3's went into the game knowing that they were going into battle!
The last few weeks of games being cancelled due to frozen pitches, meant that Rotherham struggled to get control of the game early on. Rotherham were quick to conceed the 1st goal and Boston were quick to follow up with a second. It was almost as if rotherham hadn't turned up for the 1st half of the match. 0-2 at half time.
After a firm talking to and a change of playing formation, Rotherham started the 2nd half much more composed and certainly the better side and returned to their playing ways that were missing in the 1st half. Their efforts rewarded with a penalty corner. a firm strike by M Green was deflected into the back of the net by S Forrest, 1-2.
Rotherham remained camped in the Boston half, applying pressure for much of the second half to the frustration of Boston Spa. Good open play up front from L Dodge, A Bray and debutant D Brereton was rewarded with a debutant goal by Brereton slotting the ball into the back of the net to make it 2-2.
Boston then resorted to their aggressive reputation that they hold and not within the rules of the game, 3 Boston players picking up cards for various challenges through the second half, one of which on another day may have been deemed a red card offence so the player lucky to come back onto the pitch at all.
A lapse of concentration saw Boston break quickly and get into the rotherham half and a rare presence in the Rotherham D, unfortunately a missed timed tackle resulted in a short corner from which Boston scored. 2-3.
Rotherham now chasing the game, battered and bruised, thought they were quickly back on level terms when again Brereton found himself in a scoring position, shot, the ball deflected off the Boston Spa's full back shoe and into the back of the net. To add to Rotherhams frustration the goal was disallowed and a short corner awarded. rotherham were unable to convert and a very physical, scrappy game ended 2-3 in the visitors favour.
Man of the match went to debutant D Brereton. Rotherham must step up for next weeks fixture as they host Wakefield at Aurora 11.00am push back.
