Saturdays last minute change meant that the Vets took over the 3rd team fixture against a much younger (half the age) Aireborough second team.
Daunted more by the fact that we would have to play on the First team pitch, some players not tobe mentioned were asking if we could play across the pitch.
Anyway the game started well and Hegians showed that as along as they tackled well in midfield, they would prevent the Aireborough youngster form running around the Hegians ageing backs.
Early pressure from Hegians unfortunately ended in a try for Aireborough When Daley, in his customary Scrum Half role threw out a dive pass to Smith on the blindside, unfortunately the pass was rolled along the ground behind the full back who collected and kicked to the corner, poorly. The Aireborough wing hacked down field and the chase commenced. Smith got back to the ball first but din't manage to tidy and the Aireborough backs argued as to which of the 5 of them would score the try 7 - 0 to Aireborough after 5 minutes.
That was the end of Aireborough's score for the afternoon. Hegians Vets showed their class with Dalby and Dicky tackling well in the middle and Lydon and Daz Precious winning turnover ball at every opportunity. Some excellent scruumage ball led to an excellent backs move and Dalby sything through the defence to score. The Vets were back in the game. The team began to take control and ran the ball well, creating chances out wide. Finally another backs move gave quick ball to Graham Precious who fed Smith out wide with Meek, in his more favoured wing position ?? to finish well out wide 10 - 7 Half time.
Hegians started the second half well and continued to tackle Aireborough out of the game. A fine blid side move aloowed Man Mountain Cowley to take the Aireborough defence over the line and score out wide. The Aireborough wing was dragged 10 metres hanging on to Cowleys ankles but this didn't prevent the try being scored.
Hegians were now able to play some of their best Rugby but the need for Precious D to hang onto the ball prevented some long range tries being scored, especially on one occasion in not passing to brother Graham with the tryline beckoning.
With minutes remaining Cowley finished well from an inside pass to score under the posts and give Hegians an excellent victory 22 - 7.
Hegians Vets are now in full stride building up to the end of season tournament.
