Hegians Impress at Sandal
By Jim Malia
Hegians U17s had a great day at Sandal, digging deep to finish up the day 36-19 in front.
Playing 4 x 20 mins quarters Hegians camped in the opposition half in the opening quarter but the home defence stood firm & eventually the referee had to blow early with Jack S injured with the score still 0-0.
Sandal opened the scoring shortly after half time with a smart break from their centre slicing open the Hegians defence to score a well taken try.
While Jack rested big George Jones (son of Sandal coach & ex Hegian Brandon) kindly enjoyed his first run in Hegians colours. George had a storming 20 scoring a good try on the blind side afer quick hands created space for him to power over, George also made a smart break & popped a pass to Ewan to score a good try. The try of the day though belonged to Robbie who steamed on to a smart pass from full back Josh to race away from the home defence for a great try. HT Sandal 7 Hegians 19
The 3rd quarter saw the hosts restore parity as their forwards raised their game. Hegians defended gamely but the home pack used their strength & size to power over the line for a couple of scores and level matters at 19-19 (thanks to Sandal forwards Alex & Mikey for volunteering to step in for Hegians after Tom B & Cameron had picked up knocks
With all to play for in the final quarter Hegians scored 3 cracking tries to settle the contest. Ewan powered through the midfield and showed great strength to get to the line and cross the whitewash, Will followed up a clever chip over from Oli to score unapposed and Jack scored a smart try from a well worked line out move. Thanks to Sandal forward Pat who was eager to wear the Hegians colours again.
A great performance from the depleted Hegians squad of 15 who were ably led by captain Conor who was tireless in attack and defence. All 15 Hegians lads contributed to a great team display.
Thanks to all at Sandal for loaning us players when required and allowing all the lads to enjoy a well matched contest.
Next week sees our first league match versus local rivals Yarnbury at the home of rugby.
