Roundhegians 17 - Wetherby 15
Winger Miyambo grabs two tries to help Hegians to home win
After a disappointing start to the season the previous week, Hegians were hoping for an improved performance against a tough Wetherby team that they had narrowly beaten twice last season.
Dale Cowling returned to the 2nd row as well as Tom Walsh back from illness and captain Henry Wareham returned at scrum half with Alex Miyambo coming in on the wing helping to make up for the injury to Dave Wilson as well as the unavailability of some players.
Hegians started the game well and were soon on the attack, moving the ball well from the breakdown and creating problems for the Wetherby defence who were forced into conceding penalties. After a good backs move took the play to the left wing Hegians moved it quickly back to the right wing to put Alex Miyambo clear to score in the corner.
From the kick off Hegians were soon back on the attack when James Dobson took a good catch from his own up and under, after moving the ball well again they created space for Alex Miyambo to score in the corner for a second time. Alex Jones again added the two points from an excellent conversion to take Hegians into a 14-0 lead.
Hegians seemed to be in control at this point but Wetherby fought back and scored a penalty but it was not long before Hegians were again on the attack. However, a dropped pass led to Wetherby quickly counter attacking and only some good covering allowed them to stop the score but ended up giving away a 5 metre scrum.
The powerful Wetherby scrum forced Hegians backwards and the pressure allowed them to score near the posts. With the conversion completed it took the score to 14-10 at half time.
As the second half started another dropped pass put Hegians under pressure and this led to a try as Wetherby were quick to get onto the attack and forced their way over in the corner to take a 15-14 lead
For the next 20 minutes of the second half Hegians had to constantly defend as Wetherby had good territory and possession and when Hegians went down to 14 men it seemed certain that Wetherby would score. However, a good defensive effort kept Wetherby out and eventually Hegians worked their way out of their own half.
For the rest of the half, it was Hegians in control as they started to press for a score and eventually a penalty came, which Alex Jones converted. Hegians pressed hard to make the game secure but good defence from Wetherby this time and a lack of composure meant that the game ended with Hegians just ahead and claiming the win.
Final Score Roundhegians 17 – Wetherby 15
Hegians were relieved to get the win and will hope to improve further next week away at Wath. At times Hegians looked good but there was still plenty to work on. The backline looked good when given the chance to run and man of the match Alex Miyambo took his two tries well. However, he insisted that his reward for being man of the match should be a match report bearing his name!
