Hegians win local derby
Hegians gain victory over local rivals Leos in the final home game of the season
Roundhegians 36 Leos 26
Hegians entertained Leos in their final home game of the season following a couple of disappointing performances , against opposition where they had been comfortably beaten. However, the prospect of a local derby against neighbours Leos provided the incentive that Hegians hoped would allow them to raise their game and find the form that they had shown earlier in the season.
Hegians kicked off and launched a series of attacks in the Leos 22 until eventually centre Tim Smith forced his way through to score a try after 3 minutes which was converted by Alex Jones. From the kick off Hegians quickly came back into the Leos half and after moving the ball through a series of phases, winger Simon Cummings scored in the corner on 10 minutes. For the next 10 minutes Hegians dominated territory and possession but on 20 minutes Leos showed just how dangerous their runners are when a break out their 22 nearly resulted in a try. It was not long though before Leos forced their way over the line to score a converted try.
Hegians then had to deal with an injury to Andy Childs which needed repairs and Tim Smith had to leave the field as he started to show the effects of the illness he had been suffering from all week. For the rest of the half play moved backwards and forwards until a good kick from Alex Jones followed by a good kick chase pressurised the Leos winger into a mistake, which was pounced on by Dave Wilson and he almost made it to the line before passing to Harry Wollaston who scored in the corner.
Half time Roundhegians 17- Leos 7
From the kick off Leos launched an effective counter attack but when the pass was dropped, Hegians came back up the field and launched a series of attacks before a driving maul, followed by a good run by Jim Kidston and an off load allowed Ryan Wilson to cut a good line and score a try by the posts. Hegians were quickly back on the attack and after a series of scrums near the line Number 8 Elliot Smith went over from short range to score the 5th try to take the lead to 29-7.
At this point Hegians were guilty of a careless error which presented an opportunity for the dangerous Leos backs to counter attack and score comfortably in the corner. Hegians then came back up the field and pressurised the Leos line before scoring a controversial try by Pat Hawkes. This led to a comfortable lead of 36-14 to Hegians with just over 20 minutes to go and at this point the game looked over. However Leos then had their best spell of the match as they launched a series of attacks resulting in a score in the corner by the strong Leos winger. Hegians were then forced to show their defensive qualities for the last 15 minutes as Leos tried to force their way back into the game but strong tackles from Ryan Wilson and Dave Wilson, in particular allowed the Hegians defence to remain intact until the last play of the game in which the Leos winger scored in the corner.

This was an impressive final home game for Hegians who showed the physicality and aggressive intensity that has been lacking in the last couple of games and fully deserved the win against local rivals Leos
