Hegians overcome 16 from Acklam
By Jim Malia
Hegians made the journey up to Teeside for the 1st time after agreeing a last minute pool match with the hosts. Despite several folks going the scenic route, and 1 of our cars having a chat on the hard shoulder with a member of the local constabulary we still kicked off on time!! Our pre match concerns were soon confirmed when the ref started awarding various bizarre penalties and ignoring glaring knock on's and misdemeanours!! The ref had informed us shortly before kick off that he normally officiated at football rather than rugby and boy did it show!!!! Thankfully nobody got injured but what could and should have been a fast flowing affair turned into a fragmented, stop start match while the ref decided on a rule after he had blown his whistle every 2 minutes....rant over!!!!
Credit to the hosts they started strongly with their big pack rumbling forward and live wire scrum half making some darting runs. After 10 mins they scored a good try to lead 5-0. Hegians soon hit back and after some quick ball Ewan fed Jack W who drew the last defender and put Josh in for a good try out wide. Ben made a couple of great tackles to thwart the hosts out wide. Shortly after Hegians hit the front when Will scored a great individual effort weaving his way over after slicing his way through the defensive line 50 yards out. Hegians just had enough time before the interval for Tom W to talk his way in to the sin bin!!
After much discussion at half time the 2nd period was much the same. T came off the bench having resolved his bottom problems!!
Jack S was also yellow carded having seemingly done little wrong. Hegians eventually played some rugby and after crisp passing down the back line Joe B burst clear down the wing to touch down in the corner. With Hegians withstanding heavy Home pressure from the hosts and the ref, Jack W made a superb fingertip interception on his 22', Ben & Ewan supported him and Jack cleverly fed Ewan for a brilliant try. Not to be outdone the hosts hit back with 2 tries setting up a tense finale. Unfortunately Jack S & T badly timed a tackle which resulted in a red for Jack and a yellow for T which was a fair call with the new tackle directives. With 2 mins to go and down to 13 men, captain Conor called a line out move and from the resulting play fed Xander who sprinted 25 yards to score the winner!! Well done to Xander for capping a "MOM" display by scoring the winner!! Good to see strong displays from Ned, Tom B, Adam & Jack W.
Hopefully we can have a return fixture next season. Training as normal on Tuesday, Tour of the Toon next weekend, bus leaves the club at 4:30 prompt on Friday, "Howay the Hegians"!!!!
