The Sappers came up against a big local side from Rhodes today. The accents suggest that the capital of Greece is Melbourne but they were certainly proud of their team and their island.
The game started off pretty tight with the conditions and pitch a factor throughout but eventually the Sappers pulled ahead with notable control from Chris Burke, Adam Howard and Kes Cartmell. A few good scores were made with Cummings and Porter both crossing the whitewash.
Interchanges were fast and furious for both sides and it was great to see both Mike Gardiner and Jock McLay get lots of time on the pitch for Rhodes.
The second half saw the Sappers assert some dominance and pushed forward with some classy play and constant pressure. More tries were scored with newcomers Capper and Laidlaw both notching up their first scores in RERL colours.
The game finished with a victory for the Corps of Royal Engineers. The game was played in a great spirit and the referee was given a lovely day out of the office (not sure he had ever been called 'Sir' before, stating that we were the 'nicest' team he had officiated).
The team moves onto a social with Rhodes this evening and then preparation for the big game against Greece.......(just down the road from Sydney harbour).
