Rufforth set for 'heated' leadership debate

Members at Rufforth Cricket Club are set to come to blows as the new committee for the 2014-15 season is decided later this week.

Positions on the committee are thought to be hotly contested following the club's rise into Division Two of the Wetherby League - due to a sensational loophole and much to the disdain of rivals Long Marston.

Captain Ben Lodge has already announced his intention to step down from his role, after leading the first team for two successful seasons.

During the two years, Lodge has build the second layers of Rome, following Jack Doyle famously laying the foundations in 2012.

Also in his reign, Lodge became the first captain in Rufforth history to say the phrase "All I'm saying" four times in the same sentence.

Lodge, or Spanner as he is affectionately known, looks set to remain as the club's treasurer. In an unexclusive interview, he said: "Because I'm now on a £20+ job, and because I have just bought a flat, I am the right man."

Rumours are rife that Anthony Middleton could make a sensational return from the United States to captain the first team next season.

However, leading bookmaker Phil Charlton, of William Phill, has installed Jack Doyle as a short-priced favourite 1/2 to take the role, with Danny Gunnell 11/10 hot on his heels.

Charlton himself could be a snip at 100/30 while Ed 'The Great' White has had late backing from an unidentified angry 24-year-old and is now at 5/1.

Teenage spin bowler Liam Spindlow has been priced at 12/1 by Lodgebrooks, while club legends Pete 'The Archer' Atkinson and Dave 'The Grunt' Green are both outsiders at 50/1.

In a surprise twist to the betting, Simon Lewis, formerly of Long Marston, was backed into 20/1 for the first team captaincy role. One time Rufforth favourite Rob Hildreth is listed at 500/1.

One outsider said: "It's going to be a heated debate."

Elsewhere, Connor Sanderson has his name on the second team skippership, according to William Phil.

The teenage diminishing prospect led the second team following Dom Midgeley's departure at the latter end of the 2014 season, and is a 1/20 red-hot favourite to continue in the role.

Pat Gaughan, who missed 2014 due to illness, is Sanderson's rival for the role but his own betting company Patty Power has already started paying out on the front-runner.

The Rufforth CC AGM will take place at the clubhouse on Sunday, October 26 at 5pm.
