RUGBY Town failed to stop Farnborough’s march towards the Zamaretto Premier Division title as top-beat-bottom 4-0 at Butlin Road.
Three goals inside the final 15 minutes added a gloss to the score-line as Valley scrapped gallantly to try to earn a point against their big-spending visitors.
Lee Colkin’s men played well for the majority of the afternoon, and after they had enjoyed a decent opening period, Farnborough scored against the run of play when Dean McDonald hit a rasping drive that flicked the base of the post on its way into the bottom corner.
The visitors then came close to doubling their advantage when McDonald’s looping header cannoned off the crossbar, before Valley then came close to grabbing an equaliser – Matt Brown bringing a fine save out of Michael Jordan.
Things then turned nasty after the interval with Farnborough skipper Steve Robinson fortunate to remain on the field after appearing to cuff Brown around the back of the head as the pair tangled while chasing down a long ball, before McDonald added insult to Rugby injury with his second.
Valley were forced to chase the game, and despite a period of territorial advantage, McDonald caught Rugby on the break and fired home a strike that secured the match-ball.
And Anthony Thompson added further punishment to an undeserving Rugby when he curled home.
