A quick-fire double early in the second period ensured that Rushall Olympic began the new year by completing the double over fierce rivals Chasetown in a Bank Holiday Evo-Stik League Premier Division fixture at The Scholars Ground.

The thoroughly deserved 2-0 victory saw the Pics climb up to eighth place in the league standings, just six points shy of the promotion play-off places and put them in good stead for the weekend visit of leaders Chester FC in what should be played out in front of Dales Lanes’ largest attendance for many seasons.

Rushall opted to make some changes to the side that had claimed a useful point at home to Bradford Park Avenue on Boxing Day as James Skedgel returned to the starting line-up at the expense of Decio Gomes, while Alex Forde was chosen in midfield ahead of Richard Blythe.

Despite the final score line the visitors endured a rather fruitless first period as they struggled to get a proper foot hold in the game, however despite Chasetown enjoying the better of the possession on offer the opponents otherwise effectively cancelled each other out.

Chasetown were first to threaten when with only two minutes on the watch a deep free-kick delivered by Mark Branch picked out Richard Teesdale, but the home skipper could only direct a header well wide.

On 7 minutes Olympic continued to display some recently acquired bad habits as they conceded another free-kick in a dangerous position that Branch this time curled over the woodwork from just outside the penalty area.

Rushall skipper Lucan Spittle almost put his side in jeopardy in the 20th minute. While attempting to shepherd the ball out for a goal kick he came under pressure from Danny Smith and Chris Gemmell was ultimately forced to dive on the ball at the feet of Dean Perrow to quell the danger.

On the half hour mark Spittle conceded a free-kick to Chasetown and from the left channel Dave Bridgewater’s delivery saw Gemmell attempting to punch clear under pressure from Smith, only to see the forward just fail to meet the centre with a telling header as the danger eventually ran clear.

As play moved swiftly to the other end a vocal penalty appeal rang out from within the confines of the Scholars penalty as Bridgewater appeared to handle a centre was whipped in from the left, however referee Mr. Woodward remained unmoved.

Half-Time: Chasetown 0-0 Rushall Olympic

Following an interval debriefing from their management team Olympic returned to the fray for the second period a totally different proposition and they were straight out of the starting blocks on the offensive.

On 54 minutes a period of sustained pressure from the visitors reaped huge dividends as they forced two successive corners, the second of which was delivered from the left by Mark Briggs and flicked on by Lewis into the feet of FORDE. As the midfielder pulled the trigger from 12 yards out his first time drive took a couple of minor defensive deflections on its way through the crowded goalmouth and past the flat footed Ryan Price.

With the hosts now firmly on the back foot Rushall appeared intent on going straight for the jugular and within three minutes of the restart a superb defence splitting pass from Sean Platt sent Obeng darting into space through the right channel. As the forward checked his run he glanced up and spotted strike partner Lewis making a run to the far post, towards whom he delivered a telling centre. However, as JIMMY TURNER attempted to make an interception with Lewis steadying himself to pull the trigger the Scholars defender only succeeded in bundling the ball over his own goal line.

As Olympic continued to push home their advantage on 65 minutes an ambitious effort from the confident Lewis saw the forward dink the ball from the right face of the box towards the top left corner, only to see it curl wide of the target.

With 16 minutes remaining a great ball from Lewis found Obeng in space and with no less than five covering defenders in pursuit the Pics top scorer could only manage to fire straight into the arms of Price from 15 yards.

Chasetown countered immediately and forced a flag kick down the right that when delivered into the penalty area picked out Smith whose well timed scissor kick looped wide of the target.

As the hosts continued to probe for a way back into the contest, six minutes later, Perrow’s shot on the turn from just inside the box was gathered safely low down by Gemmell in the Rushall goal.

With the visitor’s content to soak up any pressure the Scholars attempted to apply in the closing stages, on 84 minutes only a superb save from Olympic’s custodian prevented Perrow from netting with a venomous first time drive after Bridgewater proved himself to be the major instigator in the move.

With three minutes remaining Rushall almost ended the game with a third goal of their own, but after Obeng was found with an excellent ball towards the left corner his pull back picked out Marco Adaggio, but with the goal at his mercy the substitute opted for a fancy flicked volley from 8 yards out that failed to come off.

Full-Time: Chasetown 0-2 Rushall Olympic
