| Rushall Olympic | 2 | vs | 1 | Ilkeston FC |
A goal in each half from sharp shooter Dave Walker maintained Rushall Olympic’s 100% start to the campaign as they ended their first appearance on home turf with a hard fought 2-1 success against newly promoted Ilkeston FC.
The likely visitors were first to threaten in the 7th minute when Jack Watts delivered an in-swinging centre from the right flank that Jamie Clarke flicked with his head straight into the waiting arms of Chris Gemmell from just inside the box.
As the heavens opened with a torrential downpour the Pics gained the initiative by storming into a 21st minute lead as Lei Brown worked the ball extremely well to left by-line before delivering a pin-point centre that WALKER headed powerfully beyond ‘keeper Chris Martin.
When the rain finally ceased Mitchell Tolley found himself in the referee’s book for a foul on Will McCall and from the resulting free-kick Matt Richards powered the set piece straight into the safe grasp of the Olympic custodian.
The hosts responded in kind right on the half hour mark when Brown was upended some 25 yards out and Louis Keenan’s low free-kick deflected off the defensive wall and cannoned off the right hand post. The loose ball was subsequently delivered back into the danger zone from the right, but as Brown headed into the net play had already been pulled up for an off-side decision.
Eight minutes prior to the interval and as Gemmell’s long clearance was helped on by Walker into the path of the industrious Brown through the left channel, as he worked his way into the periphery of the penalty area the midfielder’s low drive from an acute angle was repelled by the legs of ‘keeper Martin to concede a corner. From the resulting flag kick on the left Kyle Haynes delivery was met by the head of Walker who forced the Ilkeston custodian into a reflex save to parry away the danger.
On 43 minutes the Robins won a free-kick 25 yards out that McCall squared to Laurie Wilson who rifled well over the woodwork from a good position.
In the first minute of stoppage time some admirable work by Steve Abbott for the hosts saw the midfielder wrestle possession from the opposition before tracking to the right and unleashing a venomous drive from outside the box straight into the midriff of Martin.
Half-Time: Rushall Olympic 1-0 Ilkeston FC
The second period was barely three minutes old when Olympic doubled their advantage to give themselves an extremely healthy cushion to defend. An exquisite defence splitting pass from Brown set WALKER free who still had a lot to do as he carved his way into the box and sent a delightful finished into the top corner beyond Martin.
Just prior to the hour mark and vocal penalty appeal rang out from within the confines of the Ilkeston box as Abbott went to ground a little too easily, while two minutes later the visitors responded as Richards had two bites at the cherry before swerving a 25 yard drive wide of the right hand post.
The Robins were again on the offensive in the 64th minute when a free-kick conceded in a on the right flank was played to the far post where the dangerous Gary Ricketts took the ball under his control and fired goalwards as Gemmell parried away the danger prior to an off-side decision bringing the move to an end.
Five minutes later and as Ilkeston’s Greg Pearson delivered a telling lofted centre it was met by fellow substitute Alex Ford who headed over from 10 yards.
With 14 minutes remaining and as the imperious Walker pulled the ball back from the left by-line it was quickly latched on to by Rushall wing back Kyle Haynes whose first time strike from 22 yards was heading towards the bottom left corner. However, the Robins custodian did extremely well to rapidly dive low to his right to push away the danger at full stretch.
Right on the stroke of full time and the visitors pulled back a mere consolation goal as Pics substitute Josh Craddock conceded a needless free-kick some 25 yards out and JAMES READ drilled the resulting set piece past the right side of the wall into the bottom corner past the static Gemmell.
