The Evo-Stik League Northern Premier - Premier Division
Attendance: 190
| Rushall Olympic | 0 | vs | 3 | North Ferriby United |
Lacklustre Rushall Olympic crashed to a comprehensive 3-0 home defeat by North Ferriby United as their four game 100% record went up flames at Dales Lane.
After fielding the same line-up in their first four fixtures the Pics were forced into a reshuffle following the surprise departure of Steve Abbott to Welsh Premier League outfit Airbus UK Broughton and then losing Lucan Spittle to illness.
The loss of key personnel, plus the reversion to an unfamiliar 4-4-2 formation, appeared to do the hosts no favours at all as North Ferriby immediately tore into Rushall from the first whistle.
As early as the 4th minute the home defence were caught flat footed when Ryan Kendall turned his marker inside out and only the fingertips of Chris Gemmell diverted a rising drive over the bar from 15 yards out. From the resulting flag kick the ball was turned goalwards and Kyle Haynes was forced to head clear off the line.
With the Villagers continuing to dominate the early exchanges, with Olympic appearing a pale imitation of the side who had just reeled off four successive victories, on 12 minutes the hosts survived a huge let off. As Gary Bradshaw brought a high ball down under control he turned on a sixpence and volleyed a superb effort on to the crossbar with Gemmell beaten all ends up.
Following a torrid opening Rushall relented in the 17th minute and returned to their more favoured 3-5-2 formation, but midfield enforcer Decio Gomes was the player forced to drop back into central defence, leaving the Pics somewhat lightweight in the engine room.
Within two minutes Olympic were still firmly on the back foot as Bradshaw worked the ball to the left by-line and forced through a telling centre that struck the near post, having taken a deflection on its way out for a corner.
In every attack the visitors appeared to have a surplus of men and as Haynes conceded a 24th free-kick on the flank the resulting set piece flashed across the face of goal towards the far post but thankfully nobody was on hand to make contact.
Three minutes later and a poor clearance from Gemmell was almost punished as the ball bounced low into the feet of Bradshaw who took a touch and side footed the return just shy of the top left corner from 25 yards out with the custodian well out of position.
Just after the half hour mark and Rushall finally responded but, although on target, Louis Keenan’s free-kick from just outside the box probed straight into the waiting arms of ‘keeper Adam Nicklin.
Two minutes later and another set piece from Keenan was this time curled into the box where Wayne Daniel hooked the ball towards the right side of goal, only to see the danger cleared off the line.
With the hosts now finally enjoying more possession, ten minutes prior to the interval Michael Clarke worked the ball well through the right channel, but his pacey centre was deflected just over by a defender for a corner.
As the half-time whistle sounded Olympic were somewhat relieved and extremely fortunate to have reached the interval unscathed following such a disjointed display during the first period.
Half-Time: Rushall Olympic 0-0 North Ferriby United
Four minutes following the restart and Rushall’s Dave Walker was upended some 30 yards out and from the resulting free-kick Mitchell Tolley drove the ball towards the right side of goal, but ‘keeper Nicklin made easy work of the take.
Olympic began on the downward spiral to defeat in the 53rd minute when BEN HUNTER all too easily peeled away from marker Daniel and as the midfielder advanced he struck a fine drive from 25 yards out that beat Gemmell into the left side of goal.
A flurry of substitutions followed from both sides, the most surprising of which was the sacrificing of the Rushall strike pairing of Clarke and Walker for Hakeem Islam and Andre Landell with more than half an hour of the contest remaining.
Four minutes later and the writing was well and truly on the wall for Olympic. As a free-kick from Tolley on the left was met by a header from Daniel that bounced just wide of the far post, in the very next phase of play the Villagers doubled their advantage. As Kendall carved his way through towards the left hand by-line he centred invitingly to the far post where the unmarked BRADSHAW ghosted in to clinically convert from close range.
It was game over for the hosts with 13 minutes remaining when KENDALL found himself in acres of space after all too easily losing his marker and proceeded to waltz through to the edge of the box and consummately drive a fine finish inside the left hand post past Gemmell.
Things almost went from bad to worse for Rushall when straight from the restart North Ferriby immediately won possession and worked the ball towards the left hand by-line, resulting in a centre that struck the arm of Gomes to render a penalty kick. However, the Pics custodian produced a superb save to deny Russell Fry from the 12 yard mark, diving to his left, before also repelling a follow-up effort from Bradshaw.
