Under 12's back to form!
Good performances against Luton and Peterbro' Lions
After 4 weeks since the last match ( an appalling thrashing at the hands of Towcester) , and with a raft of withdrawals due to injury and illness the Under 12's travelled to Luton more in hope than expectation. However, it became clear early in the first game that the hard work at training over the last couple of weeks and an improved attitude was going to make a difference.
In match 1 the forwards really stepped up and met the bigger Luton pack head on, no one took a backwards step and the first few rucks and mauls were well contested - this visibly built confidence and it quickly grew across the team. The front row of Charlie, Tom and Christian were aggressive in the loose and made sure that the first line of defence was solid. With Farren dominating the ruck contest and Zach breaking the gain line in attack the forwards, as a unit, laid the foundation for one of the best performances for a long time.
Despite constant pressure from his opposite number Noah made sure of some good service to Tomos at flyhalf who mixed up his options well and really controlled the game. Charlie G opened the scoring with a typical finish after the ball had moved quickly through the backs with Josh and Harrison combining well in the centre. Tomos and Josh then combined with a well rehearsed move that split the Luton defence wide open for Josh to race over. Half Time 2-0 to Rushden.
Luton started the second half strongly and within a minute had cut the deficit with a try. But Rushden responded by tightening up the game and with the forwards providing the platform and with Tomos consistently turning the Luton defence with a neat kicking display Rushden kept the pressure on the home side. Eventually the opportunity came as Josh crashed through to score another try. As the clock ticked down the Luton defence pressed hard and Tomos neatly chipped ahead and with a friendly bounce was able to regain the ball and beat the last man for a great finish. Final score 4-1 to Rushden.
Match 2 against Luton saw Rushden make a number of personnel and positional changes in the team with club debuts for Harrison Lazenby and Callum Mason and with Braedon , Jack and Edward taking the field. A strong Luton side quickly established a 2-0 lead after a slow start and sloppy defence from the re-structured Den boys. But as the first half wore on the team worked their way back in to the game and on the stroke of half time Zach again broke through but this time made it over the line to score. Half-time 3-1 to Luton.
A much better second half display managed to prevent Luton scoring again, and in the first minute Zach burst through again to cut the deficit to one try. For the remainder of the game Rushden stayed camped in the Luton half but despite going close a few times they were eventually beaten by the clock and a good dose of white line fever as overlaps were ignored and tries went begging! Final score - a very credible 3-2 to Luton
Final match was against Peterbro' Lions and saw a further round of changes with Ben V successfully moving into the back row and Will switching to scrum half to replace the injured Noah. The boys all turned up for the third game running and started with a bang with Charlie Green scoring after a minute and then Tomos , Charlie (again) and Josh all waltzing over again to give a 4-0 half time lead. With the game effectively won by half time the 12's relaxed and began to play with even more confidence as they put the Lions to the sword. To give credit to the Lions they battled to the end and managed to restrict us to only 2 tries in the half - another one each for Josh and Zach. Final score 6-0 to Rushden.
After the disappointing result against Towcester this was a welcome return to form against two good teams. Our more established players showed great confidence and our new recruits and developing players also stepped up and gave good performances - a good sign for the rest of the season and a solid platform to build from. Well done boys
