Under 13's Kick off with a Win
Debutants shine as R&H bounce back from slow start!
R&H U13's kicked off the season with a mixed performance against a much improved Oundle.
The usual sleepy and disorganised start from the visitors saw the home side race into a 10-nil lead after only 4 minutes as they twice broke from deep using the full width of the bigger pitch to outflank the Rushden back line who were struggling to maintain their defensive structure. After realising that the team was actually set up with three centres and no right wing the game settled down as Rushden began to find their feet, tightened their defence and took the right positions!
As Rushden worked their way back in to the game they were rewarded with three first half tries. Debutant Ollie Hart crashed over from short range to close the gap, followed by Scrum-half Noah who wriggled over to level things after some good work in the loose by the pack. On the stroke of half time Charlie Green went over after some slick handling to give Rushden a narrow 10-15 lead at half time.
The second half began much like the first with Rushden failing to manage the re-start, allowing Oundle to race over to level the scores after only 33 seconds. This did however seem to galvanise Rushden who again dragged themselves back in to the game as Peter Metcalfe went over to score - becoming the second player to mark his debut with a try.
The turning point of the game came with 10 mins to go when smart thinking from Christian Evans saw him take a quick tap and run in from 30 metres to score a well taken try. After that Rushden began to put some passing together and create spaces as Oundle tired. The forwards although second best in the loose for long periods began to dominate in the scrum and this augurs well for the season... if we can sort the rest out!
After some great inter-passing between the backs the ball was re-cycled for the 4th time and Tomos fed Peter to stroll in for his second try.
As Rushden got into their stride a number of chances to further extend the lead were lost due to some poor decisions or lack of quality in the pass at the critical moment, and against better opposition that could be costly. But the match finished on a positive note when Josh picked up the ball near half way and was involved twice in some neat interplay before he scythed through to score. Final Score 25-35 (Rushden Win)
A credible result for the first game of the season with a number of players in new positions and some debutants playing against a much improved Oundle team. Some really positive elements in the scrum and our attacking ability in the backs, but much to work on defence and in the ruck and maul as we look forward to bigger tests this season! Next week Peterboro' festival.
