Gayle force storm hits Bigglewade...
Boys are back to winning ways
Last week was all about the development team, this weekend was all about the boys coming back into the side. Klye S, Kyle J, Eliott F, Aiden K, Freddie J, Lewis M and Arron G were all back in the side certainly showed why they were missed last week. Jamie and Tana were still missing meaning Jake and Ryan continued to form a new half back pairing.
With Biggleswade ref not showing up, Willow stepped in to ref the first half while Stenna nursed a bad back from his painting duties.
The game started well for Rushden with the pack dominating from the first whistle. Kyle J, Max H and Elliott F made good ground and in typical bullocking fashion Elliott sliced through the defence to score on 4 minutes. 5-0
With 5 points on the board the side lost its way, the boys worked themselves into opportunities to score but could not press home their dominance. The "I can do everything on my own mentality” crept in, as 4 man over laps were dismissed, forward passes were thrown and an awful chip on the try line saw at least 15 points go begging . Credit should also go to Biggleswade as they defend manfully and also to the ref who forgot what the off side law was!!
Kyle J, did manage to convert one opportunity on 20 minutes to make the score 10-0. As Arron converted to make it 12- 0 Stenna made a swap in midfield with Arron moving to 13 and Matt P coming on the wing…..it was a master stroke!
No sooner had Biggleswade kicked off they were back under the posts. The ball was kicked to Freddie who set up a ruck on the half way line, quick ball was moved to Arron who cruised past three defenders to score under the posts 17 - 0. Conversion successful 19 - 0
The tries settled the team down and they started to play rugby as a team. The phases created lead to another try for Kyle J who used his new-found pace to out strip the defence. This was followed shortly after by Max H who bulldozed his way over following a neat interchange of passing amongst the forwards. 29 - 0 as no conversions were successful.
Fittingly the last try of the half was scored by Arron 34 - 0
Half time saw a change in the ref with Stenna taking over proceedings and a raft of changes in the squad. The coaches decided that more speed was needed in the back row and brought on James A, Harry T and new comer Jack M made his debut.
The changes did nothing to upset the rhythm as within 4 minutes of the kick off Matthew P was heading down the wing from a lovely blindside break by Ryan. 39 - 0
The boys were now in full flow with backs creating space out wide, which resulted in Arron gliding up the left hand touch line for try number 3 which he duly converted 46 - 0.
Biggleswade heads dropped and allowed Rushden to score three quick tries in the space of 7 minutes all in the same place!!!!!
Matthew P showed his pace with a break from the half way line after great support and link play from James A , something he excelled in all game. 51 - 0. Not to be out done Lewis M then collected a pass from Aiden on the half way line, shrugged of two tacklers and got those "crazy legs going" and scorched the turf to score out wide 56 - 0. Callum, now playing at full back scored off a "belly ball" as his pace and a lovely arching run split two defenders. 61-0
With the game now won the coaches again made more subs to ensure everyone had good game time. The confusion of who was playing were allowed Biggleswade to take advantage. Their fly half, who was an excellent player scored a fine individual try to make it 61 - 5
Arron then scored two break away tries from inside his own half, just to remind all watching how quick he really is......even the touch judge and ref could keep up! He knocked over both conversions from in front of the post.75 - 5
Annoyingly, the boys then switched off and allowed Biggleswade 10 minutes of dominance. A silly penalty given away allowed Biggleswade to kick for the corner and from several phases of play their number 8 barged over for the final points of the game. 75 -10
Coaches Point of View
It was a good win, to get the whole squad onto the pitch for game time and not be under any pressure shows just how much the boys are developing. We thought there were some standout performances from Arron, Kyle J, Aiden K and James A linked the play well once Biggleswade started to tire. It was good to see Jack make his debut. Its also nice to see players playing in different positions and challenging their skill set.
For next week we will be focusing training on playing structure and tackling. We can't revert to "I can score by running through every one" or "I can run around everyone and I don't need to pass" we must stick to structures, as this is what creates tries as shown in the second half. Tackling has to improve both in technique and physicality, as to often we let players go or miss tackles which would have been punished by a better side.
