Right back Louis Carney an stand in left back Callum Lloyd stole the limelight in a 2-0 away win against Llay Welfare on Saturday.

The teenage full backs had standout performances which proved to be decisive in the Reserves notching up back to back impressive away wins. Ruthin were a bit lightweight in terms of defensive cover and usual front men Callum and Louis were called to do a job at the back, which they delivered in impressive style.

The Reserves started well and with the wind had the lion’s share of possession. Llay were struggling to contain the attacking threats Ruthin possessed. Ruthin struggled however to play a killer pass that would unlock the home defence. Ruthin knocked and knocked but just failed to create a real chance to really test the home keeper. At the other end Jak Newell and Lewis Weatherley had to be alert as Llay use the two front men to pump the ball up to and they had to be fully aware of the home sides attack.

The breakthrough came for Ruthin after 25 minutes when a quick throw in from Dave Finnie found Tom Jones behind the home defence; his square pass was slotted home by Tom Cummings. In terms of action that was pretty much it for the first half. A half that was dominated by some wayward passing on what was a very hard pitch. Both sides struggled to deal with the uneven bounces and hard surface.

The second half saw much of the same however Llay did see more of the ball. Chris Hardy had more work to do in this half between the posts however his positioning along with a well marshalled defence meant he didn’t actually have to make a save of real note. As the clocked ticked on Ruthin knew they needed a second to really put the game to bed, again chances were made but that final killer instinct was lacking. With a change of personnel Louis Carney was pushed forward and his energy and determination paid off as he chased what was seemingly a lost cause, he somehow managed to get possession only to be bowled over by the home keeper inside the box. A stone wall penalty in which ever-consistent Dafydd Jones slotted home, he remains the top scorer thanks to his expertise from the spot. Ruthin could have, and should have added to the tally in the dying minutes but guilt edged chances were unfortunately missed.

That’s back to back away wins with clean sheets against tough opposition. Ruthin have two games left one being against the impressive Cefn Druids next week before finishing at home versus Hawarden.

Man of the Match:
Votes were cast for Jak Newell for his determined centre back work and Tom Jones for his creative work off front man TJ. It boiled down to a close call however between full backs Louis Carney and Callum Lloyd. Callum had an outstanding game at left back, even more impressive as that was the 17 year olds first ever game in defence. Louis just edged the votes however with a truly solid game at right back and once moved forward his determination and grit won the decisive penalty which sealed the game.

Reserves next game is away to Cefn Druids Saturday 18th April 2:30pm KO in the league.
