Ruthin Reserves stumbled at the first hurdle of the League Cup losing on penalties to Coedpoeth on Saturday.

Upon arrival to Coedpoeth it looked like a month’s worth of rain had fallen solely on the Coedpoeth pitch and with the wind blowing it was never going to be a pretty free flowing game. Ruthin couldn’t argue with the squad as players flocked back to the club after recent weeks and players were certainly playing for future places.

After 10 minutes of Coedpoeth pressure Ruthin settled into the game and had the lion’s share of possession. Chances were hard to carve out as the wind seemed to push any passes back towards their own goal. It did open up though as within 20 minutes Sam Jones and Louis Carney both went close. Dylan Jones had very little to do in the first 45 as Ruthin pressed but just couldn’t create a clear scoring opportunity.

As the second half got under way Ruthin again pressed but failed to really test the Coedpoeth keeper however he did pull off saves from Jak Newell and a Lewis Weatherley header. Sure enough the home team took the lead after a set piece that was deflected in leaving Dylan Jones no chance. Again Ruthin pressed but it was from a set piece they got the equaliser as Jak Newell curled in a stunning free kick for Neil Davies to head home. Ruthin really should have gone on to win the match but again failed to net the winner.

Extra time went the same way as the previous 90 minutes with Ruthin pressing for a goal that didn’t come and Coedpoeth looking dangerous from set pieces and counter attacks.

Penalties awaited and after neither side won from the initial 5 it was Coedpoeth who went through in sudden death. Credit to Coedpoeth who battled all game and their determination paid off. Ruthin will certainly be disappointed not to progress however no complaints as it just shows that to win matches you have to take your chances and unfortunately Ruthin were simply not good enough.
