Rye 22 v Newick 44

Three second half injuries contributed significantly to Rye being beaten on saturday

Rye were actually 22-18 in front at half time in their latest Sussex one fixture, but strugled to cope with the subsequent disruption and returned home without even a bonus point for losing by seven points or fewer.

Club Chairman Tony Pierce said "It was very disappointing result. The injuries seemed to shake them to the core and they lost their way. They had substitutes that were plenty good enough, but it seemed everybody just hit the panic button and before they knew it, they were three tries down."

Although they had three or four backs unavailable and were playing their first game for three weeks, Rye arrived in the mid Sussex village of Newick on the A272 with a good side and feeling quite optimistic.

Despite one or two slip ups in defence, Rye performed well during a first half in which the scoring alternated from one team to the other and it was they who had the edge at the break.

Jamie Moore, who seemed to be back to his best following a long term back problem, scored two of the tries and Graham Nunn went over for the other, while the rest of the points came from the boot of Chris Edwards.

But knee injuries which forced off Dave Blackman, John Smith and Paul Fielder, who had only come on as a replacementfor Darren Piper, knocked Rye out of their stride and Newick scored 26 unanswered points.
