Club mourns loss of larger than life character
Club fixture secretary John Haslem died recently, suffering a heart attack following a short illness.
John was doing a great job for the club in one of those behind-the-scenes but trying roles few people fully appreciate. He was a much-loved character whose quiet, dry sense of humour made him good company.
Many ex-players will recall a trip to play at Sterling, after which we went into the town to continue drinking with the home players.
Between pubs, John removed a huge, metal 'Barclaycard' from the wall of a filling station. At the next bar he clashed it on the bar and asked with a straight face if they took Barclaycard.
That was typical of his rebellious but always good-natured take on things.
He is already badly missed.
John's funeral is to take place on Friday the 13th (he would've chuckled at that one!) of April at West Rd Crem at 3pm, followed by a get-together at the club. There will be extra Broon Ale in stock.
The family request that you wear something colourful, even if its just a bonny tie. Donations will be split between Ryton RFC youth and The Teenage Cancer Trust.
