Ryton under 11’s travelled to Gateshead RFC on a beautiful sunny morning to play their last county fixture of the season. We travelled without Luke Greenwood, Jack Walton, Dylan King, Ben Cairns & Peter Grey because of Illness/Injury and Holidays but we welcomed back Drew Davison, Kyle Brooks & Captain for Game 1 Nathan Brett. The focus for the team was to really put pressure on the opposition to force mistakes and the Lads did that from the very first whistle and it was not long before the first try came along with the pack winning great ball to allow the backs to send the ball through the hands which created space for Drew Davison to score a fine try, Dan Lax slotted the conversion & Ryton were off to a flyer. The Ground was really hard and the lads to their credit didn’t let this affect how hard they competed for the ball at the break down and the pack were totally dominant with Nathan Brett and Lewis Hamilton showing real power to add to the great strength and technique that we have in the front row of Dominic Phillips, Kieran Forster & Danny Chambers. The total domination upfront allowed the Backs to show what they could do playing some lovely running Rugby with Tom Cairns looking a constant threat from the base of both scrum and ruck which allowed Danny Lax the space to create havoc for the Gateshead defence. Futher first half trys from Daniel Lax and Tom Cairns were the least the Ryton Lads deserved for their first half attacking display but the half was tarnished with the ever willing Gateshead team crossing for a converted try following at least 3 weak arm attempts of a tackle which is the one thing that has cost us at both the county cup and the landrover cup over the past couple of weeks and is something the boys must sort out!
Half Time: Gateshead 7 Ryton 21
Ryton Brought Matthew Stephenson on in the 2nd Half for Lewis Hamilton who had had a fine first half in the 2nd Row and the started how they had played the majority of the first half with lovely quick ball being delivered by Tom Cairns behind the solid platform that the pack provided with the back line of Dan Lax, Drew Davison, Kyle Brooks, Louis Knox, Euan Brooks and James Hurst with loads of chances to show their attacking skills which Gateshead struggled to contain. Further tries from Drew Davison and Daniel Lax x 2 which were all converted by Daniel Lax ended the scoring for Ryton but sandwiched in between these Scores was another Gateshead score with again the dreaded week arm non tackle being the cause!!!!!
Over all an excellent display on really hard ground with the running attacking rugby the boys playing was a real joy to watch behind a totally dominant forward pack. The Team were excellent with Danny Chambers & Nathan Brett leading the pack superbly and Drew and Kyle linking superbly in midfield but Man of the match was given to Daniel Lax following his 27 point haul but the quick ball he received from Tom Cairns and the Ball the pack won were a big part of his individual success.
Final Score: Gateshead 14 Ryton 42
Gateshead 21 Ryton 28 – Game 2

For the 2nd game the team was left the same way it finished game 1 with Lewis Hamilton showing his versatility by Starting on the right wing. The Gateshead Lads were really pumped up for the 2nd game and showed great spirit to take the game to Ryton and unfortunately the weak arm non tackles resulted in 3 first half trys from the hosts with Ryton getting one back following great determined play by our Mr Reliable Danny Chambers with Drew Davison slotting the extras but the boys went in trailing 21 – 14 despite great efforts from Matthew Stephenson being held up and just stepping into touch and louis Knox just having the ball dislodged as he crossed the line but Tom Cairns would not be denied as he picked from the base of the scrum to snipe in and score a classic Scrum Half’s Try and Daniel Lax kicked the extras to get the boys back in the game.
Half Time: Gateshead 21 Ryton 14
The 2nd half Ryton Dominic Phillips came off after taking a knock and Lewis Hamilton went into tight head prop with Euan Brooks coming onto the right wing.
With the boys ears ringing from the reminder that weak arms are not acceptable the guys came out and turned in a competent 2nd half display to end the season on a real high trys from Firstly Daniel Lax and then Drew Davison which were both converted by Dan Lax. The 2nd half was played entirely in the Gateshead half with Ryton really taking the game to a gallant but Tired Gateshead team.
The 2nd half was a great powerful display with Matthew Stephenson picking up the Man of the match award but the Pack as a whole were really good with Lewis Hamilton doing a great job at tight head and a special mention to Kyle Brooks who deserved a try for a fine mornings rugby running some great lines and his support play and offloading was a joy to watch.
Well done Guys great display & a fantastic way to end a really succesful regular season!
