Again a tale of 2 halves.
StJudes kicked off and we drove the ball back hard on our first 3 drives culminating in a try for Bowden Morgan from a 1 yard scoot from dummy half on 2 minutes, conversion scored by Dom D'Adamo for a [0/6] lead.
Some scrappy play for the next 5 minutes or so with StJudes pressing hard and Rangers making simple mistakes and giving away too much ball and silly penalties. On 9 minutes StJudes worked down the Rangers left hand side with a grubber kick on the last into the corner, the ball bobbled in goal and the rangers player tried to pick up instead of kicking the ball into next week, missed the ball and StJudes collected and touched down, the conversion from the touchline was missed giving a [4/6] scoreline.
5 minutes later on 14 minutes Rangers gave away a silly penalty on thier own 10 for retaliation on the 3rd drive out on the left hand side and this allowed StJudes to sweep the ball across the pithc attcking the Rangers Right hand side and going over in the opposite corner despite attention from Rangers defenders. Conversion missed from the touchline score now [8/6]. For the next 10 minutes it was very much end to end sets with Rangers completing very few full sets but disappointingly giving away a lot of penalties in good attacking positions. On 28 minutes StJudes were given a penalty for an alledged rip, which they chose to convert rather than run to given StJudes a lead at half time of [10/6].
The second half started off very much like the first and for 20 minutes it was tit for tat with both sides driving the ball, kicking and defending hard with no further scores for either side.
On 20 minutes Rangers ran through a training ground move which allowed Lewis Christian to power over, converted by Dom D'Adamo [10/12]. Further tussles with the Front and Second rows working really hard in attack and defence saw St Judes start to tire and this presented some gaps, one of which Jed Mawdsley powered through to score under the sticks on 26 minutes again convertion by Dom D [10/18]. 3 minutes later a burst down the StJudes left by Harry Wallace and excellent support running and a great call by Bowden Morgan saw Bowden go over and work through to the sticks for a try, converted by Dom D [10/24].
There were some good individual performances and a lot of work and effort put in especially from the Pack.
Like i said at the start it was nice to WIN again BUT:
We gave away 8 penalties in the first half and a further 5 in the second not good enough at this level. Also our completion rate was probably around 50%-60% at best again not good enough at this level.
We made hard work of this game with the mistakes we made but what made us as coaches proud was that for once showed mental and physical strength to remain focussed and to get the job done. This gives us a great deal of optimism for the future and we need to use the next 3 weeks to build on the positivity that a WIN brings to the team. Lets move on from here and give 100% every week thats all we can ask for.
Well done lads from the coaching team.
Coaches man of the match - Bowden Morgan (19 tackkles, 10 drives, 2 tries) Well done.
