An inauspicious start to the match saw Rangers immediately concede possession with a knock-on. Some great team defending held Woolston's attack at bay and a forward pass handed possession back to Saddleworth.
Good runs from Mark Reynolds, Max Walsh
, Tommy Jackson
and Rory Lloyd
saw some good progress up the pitch but no try.
Excellent defending again saw Woolston held at bay before they knocked on and handed possession back to Rangers. A superb passing manoeuvre reached Tommy Jackson
in acres of space and he ran over to score a brilliant team try.
A period of sloppy play from both sides saw possession quickly swap back and forth a couple of times before another brilliant passing manoeuvre from Max Walsh
to Thomas Whitehead
then Ellis Barnes
found Tommy Jackson
again in space. Unfortunately he was bundled into touch just before the try line.
A brilliant interception from Ellis Barnes
quickly regained possession for Rangers and Cameron Haigh
was able to capitalise and score on his debut to bring in half time.
The second half started well with Rangers on the defence. Max Arden made a couple of great tackles and Cameron Haigh
made a brilliant covering tackle. A high tackle on the fifth gave Woolston another set of six to attack and they capitalised to score their first of the match.
Rangers very quickly replied with a brilliant run from Max Arden followed by Thomas Whitehead
who ran through to score. More great team defending including a brilliant tackle from Ross Heald
, again held out Woolston.
Another quick try from Rangers saw Tommy Jackson
make a brilliant run up the pitch to set up Ellis Barnes
to score. Rangers' defence again stood firm notable tackles this time coming from Max Walsh
and Cameron Haigh
Rangers' next attack started with a great run from Max Arden setting up Ellis Barnes
to score his second in quick succession. This was immediately followed by an interception from Ellis Barnes
to regain possession for Rangers. Mark Reynolds made an excellent run before setting up Ellis Barnes
who looked set to score his hat-trick but was unfortunately bundled into touch just before the try line.
Saddleworth again showed an impenetrable defence with notable tackles coming from Cameron Haigh
and Ross Heald
before brilliant running from Max Walsh
and Cameron Haigh
set up Max Arden to score Rangers' 6th.
The last attack of the match went to Woolston and despite a brilliant tackle from Mark Reynolds they managed to score a consolation try.
