Walden gain a precious win on the road at South Woodham Ferrers
A bonus point win keeps the pressure on the teams above.
Walden travelled to South Woodham Ferrers and even with the sun out the pitch was still suffering from the large amounts of rain earlier in the week and in places was extremely soft.
With wet ground and the slippery ball both teams found it hard to retain possession in the opening 10 mins. However it was Walden first on the score board when South Woodham Ferrers tried to pass the ball across the backs on their 10 metre line and Walden’s flyhalf Tom Price intercepted. He sprinted the 40 metres to score under the posts and converted his own try 7- 0 after 15 mins.
5 mins later the home team levelled the score when they worked the ball up the field and after several phases managed to crash over the Walden try line.
From the kick off Walden pressurised the Home defence and as they struggled to clear their lines they tried to kick down field but Walden charged the ball down and as it bounced over the try line 2nd Row James Gosden was first on to it to score Walden's second to go 14- 7 up.
Walden were now in the ascendency and attacking from deep they broke through the first line of defence with some strong running by the backs who combined well down the right to take the ball deep into the Woodham half. Then after a good tackle by the full back the ball was spun left, winger Olly Webber ran forward and chipped it over the try line as he outpaced the defence he looked as though he was going to score when he was pulled back off the ball, the Referee had no choice but to award a penalty try to stretch Walden's lead to 21 -7.
On the last play of the half Woodham scored a try wide out to with the winger crashing over in the corner to leave Walden 9 points up 21-12.
The second half was a tense affair and Walden started off brightly but despite going close a couple of times could not get the ball over the line. Woodham came back and some great Walden defence held them out even when they got the ball over the line a couple of times Walden managed to hold them up.
Finally Walden upped the tempo of the game and found some space on the tight pitch and sealed the game with right winger Adam Miles going over in the corner for the bonus point try and Tom Price converted to pull ahead 28 -12.
Woodham never gave up trying and scored a penalty try in the last play of the game when a 5 metre scrum was pushed over the try line and Walden pulled it down.
Final score 28 -19 and Walden were happy to get their 3rd win of the season and to keep their hopes of avoiding relegation alive. Some great performances but special mention goes to Nick Dawson who had to play most of the game at prop despite normally playing at inside centre.
