Walden have to settle for 2nd place in the league as they come close but not quite close enough at Chelmsford

Walden's last league game of the season was a visit to 4th place Chelmsford which was always going to be a difficult game with Chelmsford out to avenge a narrow defeat by Walden in the first game of the season.
Walden kicked off with the elements in the favour with the breeze at their backs and playing down the slope. 2 penalties kicked by Will Brown playing at centre saw them open up a 6 point gap before a slick move by Chelmsford created an overlap and their winger ran in and under the posts to go ahead 7-6.
Walden then scored from a driving maul after a 5mtre line out and No 8 Nik Baker dotted down. 7- 11 Chelmsford hit back and a good counter attack saw a 3 on 2 situation on the
blind side to score in the corner. 12 -11.
Walden then had a good period of play and scored 2 tries the first a break down the centre and a quick pass to Adam Miles who went over under the posts and the second another driving maul from a line out saw Nik Baker score his second almost identical try leaving the half time score at 12 – 23.
Chelmsford now had the elements and with home advantage they started off strongly pressurising Walden into a mistake and an off load was intercepted and they ran in a try from half way to narrow the gap to 19 -23. Walden hit back with a well taken penalty 19 -26.
For the next 20 mins Chelmsford dominated and scored 3 further tries to first draw level and then push ahead by 38 – 26. Walden then woke up and for the last 15 mins played much better controlled rugby and scored a fine try finished off by Jon Goodin to narrow the gap to 1 score at 38 -31 with still 5 mins remaining.
Walden pushed the home team all the way and nearly scored with the last play of the game but it was not to be and Chelmsford managed to hold out getting the ball off the park as the final whistle blew.
The Walden players looked slightly disheartened but hopefully will realise that they have exceeded their expectations at the start of the season finishing second, but they still need to train hard as they will be heading down to West London for a play off game on the 3rd May against the runners up in the West League which looks likely to be Twickenham rfc.
All in all a fantastic season for the club with the firsts finishing 2nd in London NE2, the Saxons (2's) are champions of the GK Premier League and the Scorpions (3's) finished equal first in the GK Duexime League missing out on the trophy by points difference that was affected by so many of their games being called off due to weather and other factors.
A week off from playing over Easter but there are still 2 big games left, starting on the 26th April with the 2's headlining a great day of cup final rugby as the Club play host to the last ever Greene King Merit league finals at Henham with an all day festival of 4 games, Real Ale festival with many local ales, lagers and ciders to be sampled with live music with 3 bands and many other attractions for all age groups starting at 12.30pm.
Please come along to support the team and the club.
