Saxons take a fantastic win against a strong Woodford 2's
12-5, a great game with strong defence from both squads
A very hastily arranged friendly after two cancellations, we knew Woodford were strong. Rob Nolan's last game for the club before moving up to Edinburgh, the lads were very keen to give him the appropriate send off!
Walden had most of the possession and territory in the first half, Woodford squandering ball with sill errors and a high penalty count. however, their defence was absolutely rock solid and Walden could not punch through, it remained scoreless at half time. Not much to say, a few tweaks and carry on as we are, we had to grind them down eventually.
Shortly after the restart Dan Cohen powered over out wide for a 5-0 lead. Woodford cam back strong but were also unable to break a very sturdy Walden defence, all players digging deep and tackling well. We continued to carry well and take the game forward but with little giving in the Woodford defence. It was not until 71 mins that Rob Booth made a super break to score, close enough for the conversion to edge ahead 12-0 and give us a little breathing space. Woodford never lost belief and came back again, eventually breaking though on the right wing to score. And so it remained in tight last few minutes, Walden wining 12-5 and retaining an unbeaten home record this season. A great performance from all players and some real grit at times. Thank you to Sean and Luke for playing for Woodford to ensure we had contested scrums. Excellent work lads, well played and lets make sure we have a good turnout for next weekend.
