Clean sweep for Walden in 3 Counties fixture at Sudbury
An excellent morning of quality rugby and perfect conditions
Perfect conditions for the lads after the twisty journey across country to Sudbury and the usual warm welcome from a wonderful club. We had arranged a three way match with Sudbury and Crusaders from Norwich, an unknown quantity for us. First up though were the hosts, a game the boys were really looking forward to as we know how good they are. With only a half length game we knew this would be intense and so it, proved to be. We wanted to use some new playing structures which are still on trial, t worked better as the game progressed. We started well and scored in the corner after only 6 minutes, Oisin going over. Although still playing well we upped the risk factor when handling and gave possession away too quickly, leading to a penalty in front of the posts, followed by a converted try to take the score to 5-10 at half time. Although behind, the lads knew they could still win. We had to play with more patience and wait for gaps to appear whilst controlling the ball. the resulting pressure created a gap for Fraser to power through to level the scores. The lineout also improved so we were retaining ball at set piece as well, allowing the team to work up the pitch. Sudbury had a very strong scrum but we were able to hold enough on our own ball to win. After a period of intense pressure Ryan finally stormed over with a conversion from Alex to lead 10-17 and a win for the team. We had defended very well with good line-speed and discipline, converting the pressure into possession and retaining the ball. A really good display against a strong team. Sudbury had threats all over the pitch so defence had to be very well organised to cover this. Well played to all the lads.
After Crusaders had played Sudbury, we played in the final game. With six fresh forwards on we again looked to work hard on the style of game and what an amazing result. the discipline to work so well as a team was fantastic to see, Owen really setting a high example of hard work and positional sense. We dominated all the set pieces and breakdown; Aidan was in the thick of the action with Jack, ball carrying into the defenders with good control and accuracy. This set up the platform for controlling the game and creating space which was ruthlessly taken advantage of. Beau, playing 8, stormed through for two tries with superb lines, Tom rounding off the first half with a classic sniping try from the 9; all converted by Alex for a 21-0 lead. A few changes forced by injury but the team continued in the same style, bossing the breakdown, retaining ball and not allowing Crusaders to play. Ryan blasted through for two more tries from 8, Charlie getting into the action to score the final try for a 36-0 win. Crusaders are relatively new team and played very well against a more seasoned group. they will undoubtedly improve this season so we hope to play them again.
Owen Was MotM in the second game, he really set the tone for positioning, control, accuracy and executing the game plan. This is the grafting hard work which creates opportunities and should rightly be rewarded. An excellent display.
Walden handled the game plan really well, most importantly reacting to each situation and remaining calm. when we lost our way slightly, they reverted to a tighter style which paid off as we retained the ball. Certainly areas to work on but a fantastic morning with flowing rugby and a great work ethic. Well played lads, excellent rugby!
We look forward to hosting Sudbury in early December, it is sure to be a cracking game!
