U16 clinch victory in humdinger in Brentwood
Five tries and a massive tackle count secured the win against a large pack at Brentwood
What a game and what a win!! Breathtaking stuff from start to finish in a very physical encounter. Walden were very slow to get into the game, too many silly errors and poor decisions hampering any progress when we managed to get the ball. Slow line-speed and some missed tackles led to an early try for the hosts. A rallying call from all on the pitch helped to increase the work rate although we were still making errors which hindered any attack. Brentwood had a very large pack who ere very adept at going through the phases and retaining the ball, Walden having to make a huge amount of tackles, exhausting work. We were winning scrums but moving backwards at times, lineouts were very messy. Our greatest problem throughout the whole match was also the penalty count, far too many. Brentwood scored again after 17 mins for a 14-0 lead which was the real wake up call for us. Shortly after Finn scored from a superb run down the right flank to score in the corner, Alex adding the extras, a mighty conversion. Soon after the re-start Walden won the ball, sent it wide to Oisin who scorched past a couple of defenders to score under the posts, converted to bring the scores level.
After half time we were quickly into our stride with Finn taking a second after another fantastic run down the right wing, bursting through some tackles to touchdown. Again the ball going wide led to another try, Harry making a fantastic run, swerving past tackles at real pace to score, Alex converting for a 26-14 lead. Tiredness was now showing with 20 mins remaining. Some frustrating missed tackles and poor game control allowed Brentwood to score a further two converted tries to take the lead 28-26 with only 4 minutes left to pley, Walden looking like they were running out of steam. However, they showed tremendous spirit to score very soon after. Ryan, now on the wing (is there anywhere he can't play??) received the ball from a well timed off-load but still had plenty of work to do. With a step, a handoff and sheer determination he was over the line and with the conversion Walden regained the lead 33-28 to seal an amazing game. The lads were absolutely shattered but delighted with the win. Excellent work lads!
