Slick, creative rugby gives U15's cup win 56-0
Walden overcome colossal Peterborough pack to start their cup defence with an emphatic win
A beautiful sunny day at Fengate with a very strong wind blowing across the pitch, Peterborough had a huge pack so we devised a game plan involving ball movement and using the width!
From the off their pack kept it tight so we had to ruck hard to win possession. We did quite quickly and spun the ball wide to the left wing, Olly Davies with a super long run in to finish and get points on the board to settle the team. Conversions were going to be very tricky in the wind. From the restart Walden built the phases, gaining ground and using the width to send Harry over in the right hand corner. 10-0 after 6 mins and the boys were settling in well to a simple but effective game plan. The pattern continued and Harry was again released in the far corner, shortly followed by another from Olly. 20-0 after 16, the wings enjoying the extra space on offer. Our structure and discipline was paying dividends so we made a few changes to the line up. We continued to move the ball but P'boro never stopped working. on the stroke of half time, we built more phase play, sending Hugo over as he burst through their defence, conversion slotted by Morgan. 27-0 at half time.
From the restart we pressed up, won the ball, spun it wide and sent Ollie over in the right corner, a great finish with defence on his back, Morgan taking the extras. P'boro then had a renaissance, upped their effort and aggression and caused us a few issues up front. We lost a little oomph and had to absorb some pressure on our 22, the boys determined to keep a clean sheet. With 10 mins to go we upped our level of play and finished with a flurry of tries, Harry VW in the left corner shortly followed by Ming, Josh from short range after an amazing run from Luke and Fraser in the last minute, cutting their central defence in half and touching down.
Walden were controlled, disciplined, highly skilled and patient. We had some fantastic structure which allowed players to flourish with time and space. We had many ideas for MoM but Finn Thomas got the nod for controlling the game so well at 9. However, well played to all the lads, a true team effort and thankfully no more injuries!
Thank you to our hosts for a good game.
