U15's clinch County Cup final spot with win over Shelford
Walden win a very tight game 10-15 on the artificial pitch at Shelford to secure a place in the County Cup final.
Away at Shelford for the final pool game in the County Cup, a must win to secure the place in the final. We played on the artificial pitch, a first for the lads and a slightly daunting one as we knew it would lead to a fast game with lots of space.
Shelford had a large pack and used them very well, disrupting our game wherever possible. Walden lacked accuracy in the set piece with poor lineout throwing so we could not take advantage of our ball when we really needed to. After 20 mins, Ming was on the wrong end of a shoulder-to-head tackle which ended with him out of the game and a scrum to the opposition! Kaleen replaced Ming and made up for the weight change with mobility and guile. Walden were dominating territory, most of the first half spent around the Shelford 22 but without converting this into points. A few misjudgements squandering changes and some extremely hard Shelford defence holding up well. However, Walden worked a wonderful play, the ball going wide to the right and Harry VW scoring in the corner to cap a wonderful team effort and justly give Walden the lead.
We made some significant changes in the second half, John in at 9 for his first game of the season, Tom shifting to 10 to give us more kicking options. Walden built well in attack with the forwards on the line but unable to break through, the ball went wide and calm heads find space out wide for Morgan to score another super try. Shelford bounced back with two tries in 6 minutes to draw level, leaving a nail-biting last quarter. Axel sadly came off with a completely broken boot so Ryan went back on after his injury for a full throttle end to the game. Plankton camo on at 13 and immediately halted a Shelford move with a textbook tackle. A last-ditch attach won a penalty in front of the posts, the coaches assuming the lads would kick the points but throwing caution to the wind the tap was taken, the ball went through three passes with Finn making a dash for the line look easy to take the winning score.
Many good performances Tom and Ryan of note, Olly and Luke working very hard in the back row. Beau was forward of the day and Morgan best back after a splendid game at 15.
Many thanks to Shelford for a great game, we look forward to seeing you again soon.
Well played lads, a good result and now for the final!
